Conspiracy theories falsely blame Colombia earthquake on Alaska research program

An enduring conspiracy theory has resurfaced on social media after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday, with users blaming a research program in Alaska for the disaster.

Posts falsely claim that the earthquake, which has killed at least 270 people and left widespread damage, was caused by the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP, which studies the properties and behavior of the upper atmosphere.

But the earthquake was caused by natural movements in the Earth's crust. Experts say it had nothing to do with human activities.

"No human endeavor caused this earthquake," said Suzan Van der Lee, a seismologist and professor at Northwestern University. "The Colombia earthquake occurred in a region with many natural earthquakes."

She said there are cases where human activity in shallow parts of the Earth's crust such as gas extraction or waste water injection has caused small- to moderate-magnitude earthquakes. But the earthquake in Colombia occurred at a depth of 110 kilometers — at least 10 times deeper than any caused by humans, Van der Lee noted.

Conspiracy theories abound in the Lindsay Clancy case: Why online observers are spreading baseless claims

Lindsay Clancy has admitted she killed her three young children. But the internet doesn’t want to believe her.

With the case drawing national and international attention, thousands have been glued to a daily livestream from the courtroom. Others are watching clips of trial testimony posted on social media. Along the way, some have latched onto a baseless conspiracy theory: that Clancy was framed, and her ex-husband is the real killer.

“Last week I thought Lindsay Clancy killed her babies during postpartum psychosis,” one person recently wrote on X. “I now believe Patrick Clancy drugged Lindsay . . . pushed her out a window, and strangled his children with exercise bands so he could marry his new wife.”

“I really don’t pay close attention because it was so awful and I don’t wanna hear about it,” she continued, posting her thoughts in a thread. “But we have EXCULPATORY EVIDENCE.”

No such evidence has been presented in court.

Replies to the thread were mixed, with some commenters validating the theory and others calling the posts harmful and irresponsible.

Patrick Clancy has since divorced Lindsay Clancy and remarried. During the trial, several witnesses testified the couple previously had a good relationship and were both attentive parents.

Evidence that has been presented in court includes Patrick Clancy’s 911 call, filled with his gut-wrenching screams upon discovering the children. Several members of the jury fought back tears and others appeared shaken. Lindsay Clancy, paralyzed from her suicide attempt, sobbed uncontrollably in her wheelchair after the recording was played. The call was so graphic that a judge prohibited its public release, meaning the audio was heard only by those present inside the courtroom, not by online observers.

Speculating about another suspect might be easier than accepting the harrowing reality of an otherwise devoted mother brutally killing her children, said Heather Schoenfeld, associate professor of sociology at Boston University.
