You could watch it from downtown Pompeii and still have an excellent chance of living through it.

Yeah, maybe...but I think I'd rent a boat.

But I’m not claiming that. I’ll try again.
I said I’d love to watch the eruption of Vesuvius from Pompeii. You said that was bullshit. WHY is it bullshit?
Boru
I'd love to as well, but real people actually died in that eruption. I don't want to see that. I love the power of nature, both in it's constructive and destructive side. But I don't like seeing people die as a result.
I get what you are saying, seriously. But when it comes to my life, or yours, if you were in the moment with no place to escape, you would not want to be there.

Everything has an element of risk. You’re aware that 90% of the citizens of Pompeii escaped, right? For me, that’s acceptable. Conversely, I wouldn’t want to be at the site of the Tunguska Event on der tag, or witness the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

I'm sure he's seen photos of some of the people who died but none of any survivors...so, no proof, and all that.

Ok and? Pretty sure it caused PTSD in the 90%, and sure as hell sucked for the other 10%.
Otherwise why don't city parks have lava fountains for kids to run through like opening up fire hydrants?
My best friend in Oklahoma lives in the "tornado ally", he has lived there most of his life and still lives there. And just like Hawaiians, he has to live with nature like their volcanos. Just like being on the coast of NC which gets hit every so often by hurricanes, and just like Tokyo and Los Angeles have to deal with earthquakes, it does not mean that humans have to be blind to the threat, or ignore the threat.
Talking about percentage of survival is a mistake. It does not matter to the dead, or those who survive of the family of the dead.

Really? I need a source for that. It seems that most people from Pompeii survived, but I think that means they fled, not that they stayed in the center of town to watch. Either the ash or pyrochlastic flow would've killed anyone who stayed.

No, discussing survival percentages is not a mistake. Since everything has some element of risk, it is proper and prudent to assess that risk. As for this topic, a 90% chance of survival is acceptable to me. It might not be acceptable to you, and that's perfectly OK.

I didn't say I would stay to watch. But it's perfectly prudent to stand in downtown Pompeii, and think, 'That volcano's erupting. Feets, don't fail me now.'
To maximize my 'excellent chance' of living through it, I'd run like a rabbit.
