Does Colon Powell have any ambitious offspring? (well that's what his name sounds like to Aussie ears)

There's a fascinating film about Dick Cheney called 'VICE' (2018).  The film argues that Dick Cheney had and exercised more power than any Vice President in History. It's just a film, I have no idea how accurate. Entertaining though. The film showed that Cheney was very accepting and protecting of his gay daughter. Is that the one running for office?  Huh

"Vice is a 2018 American biographical black comedy-drama film written and directed by Adam McKay. The film stars Christian Bale as former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, with Amy AdamsSteve CarellSam RockwellJustin KirkTyler PerryAlison PillLily Rabe, and Jesse Plemons in supporting roles. The film follows Cheney on his path to becoming the most powerful Vice President in American history. It is the second theatrical film to depict the presidency of George W. Bush, following Oliver Stone's W. (2008)."

The guy Cheyne shot later DIED from complications of the trauma of being shot.

He should have gone to prison. Probably for several years more than Baldwin should do.

Reason - he KNEW he was firing live ammo.

Of course he knew better - but Baldwin didn't...so?

Can we get a list from you of all the notable folks who should have known better over the last while..with guns?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Wait, the guy Dick Cheney shot? He's actually still alive. He's 94, but his heart's still beating. Granted, he still has 30 pieces of buckshot still in his body, and he did have a heart attack three days after the shooting, but he's still alive.

Yeah I was just going to say, that guy is still alive.  He had a heart attack a few days later but survived.

I like Alec. He is an entertaining, funny guy and actually seems like a decent human being.

But - if he doesn' t do prison time over this - something ain' t right.

Rule #1 of guns - when you pull the trigger - you own the outcome. Period.  Only self defense or the defense of others is a valid reason to shoot someone.

Baldwin cannot blame anyone else.

He should have checked the gun to see it was safe for his intended use. End of story.

If he didn' t know how to check - he has no business handling the gun.

He is guilty of manslaughter and should do prison time.

Film crews actually pay someone to do all of that and that someone apparently failed.  That's the someone who should be held responsible.  I'm certain there are laws that cover situations such as this and those laws will be what determine who, if anyone, is charged.  And this has happened before.  In Brandon Lee's case a gun was loaded with prop bullets that were manufactured improperly and resulted in his death.  In that case I doubt any average person would have been able to see the problem beforehand, but a firearm's expert would if it had been examined properly.  So that's why I say it should be there responsibility.

Because of these incidents, I've read several articles about why they use real guns with blanks on set.  There are some legitimate reasons, but my opinion is that none of them are more important than the safety of everyone on set.  Even with blanks there is a slight chance of injuring someone.  With special effects we have today, I don't think it makes sense to put people in harms way with real firearms.  I can say that if I were working on a set and a firearm was about to be discharged in my general direction, I would demand someone check and recheck that thing first.  I'm not anti-gun at all but I am pro gun-respect.

Did anyone watch Mythbusters?  Those guys went to pretty elaborate lengths for safety but to my knowledge no one ever got hurt on set by a blast or gun.

There's another angle to this if the actor using the weapon is to be held responsible.  In action films with stunts and effects, actors are often expected to handle all sorts of items they don't usually handle, from knives to guns to swords to baseball bats...lots of things.  Any one of those things could accidentally result in another actor or set person being injured.  It seems unreasonable to hold the actor accountable for a prop failure in every case and I see no reason why this gun incident is any different.

I watched MythBusters, and can assure you that they've come close to and/or received physical injuries. They are prop guys, not scientists or engineers. One example of injuries is the time they heated jawbreaker candy in a microwave to see if it would explode. They took the door off the microwave oven, heated the jawbreaker, and, indeed, it exploded. Chunks of hot candy struck them, and if some had hit them in the eyes, they would have potentially been blinded. I quit watching after seeing a ton of stupid mistakes, some with safety, some with science, some unlawful. That show is entertainment, which always crosses the line.

I was wondering specifically about firearms or explosives and I don't remember ever reading about any serious injuries due to that.  They took extreme cautions as I remember, at least what was shown on TV.  I have no way of knowing what wasn't shown.

They were very careful to not declare that their "experiments" were scientific on many occasions.  It was entertainment, but certainly far more intelligent than most.  They did approach a lot of the myths from a scientific perspective, as in testing as many angles of a myth as they could think of, but the experiments they conducted often involved unnecessary extremes and diversions that wouldn't be described as scientific at all.  The debates about their work were equally extreme.

I would like to know what they did that was unlawful, though.

One that springs to mind is the episode where they "investigated" the strength of RATO packs on aircraft. The found a guy who was willing to provide them with rockets strapped onto the roof of a mid-'60s Chevrolet to help it accelerate on the course they chose. Supplying rockets for that sort of thing is unlawful. I'm surprised that charges weren't filed. As a member of the National Association of Rocketry in years past, anyone storing over some amount of propellant was required to have a Low Explosives Users Permit. That BATFE ruling was eventually struck down because the particular propellant to be controlled was APCP, which the used grain size was far below the detonation size of about 1000 pounds. One has to qualify for use of rocket propellant on a three-level requirement for the amount of propellant used. The guy skated around those rules by using experimental fuel. Those guys took their, and the people around them, lives in their own hands.

@Oldandeasilyconfused
Nah, that's Mary, she and her big sis Liz had a long running public spat in which Mary called her sister a hypocrite, an inveterate liar, and a political opportunist.  All over the gay marriage issue.  Dick got on the right side of that one long before Liz did.

You wanna like Mary and root for her when you hear it..but...then you're forced to recall that Mary didn't seek office..she just runs a bunch of conservative PACs.....which is somehow worse.   All of the batshit infighting and absurdly contradictory positions with regards to their public and private lives.... but when push comes to shove.... Mary and Liz downplayed their disputes, reconciled.... and dick (as we're all having fun remembering) shot a bitch in the face for some silly reason that the poor fucker had to apologize to him for..presumably, dick threatened to finish what he started.

They're clannish like that.  These are not people you want to approach for directions as the sun goes down - you'll end up in your own trunk.  Which is pretty much what liz is up to n the jan 6 com. It seems like no ones learned the lesson of dealing with these people even though they plastered the reality of their influence all over the world for two decades.
