We don’t have the population to support millions of crime lords. Even your country, with its vastly greater population, never managed more that a few hundred.

Folks who can buy tobacco to sell it to folks who can’t will - sooner rather than later - be all but impossible. Tobacco isn’t grown in NZ, and it’s pretty difficult to smuggle it in large enough quantities to make doing so worthwhile (one of the advantages of living on an island  that takes customs very seriously).

Contrary to what you seem to think, this isn’t a rights issue, it’s a public health issue. Tobacco use will eventually - with the right legislation, proper enforcement, and a bit of luck - be eradicated here.

And I couldn’t be happier about it.

There was a time when liberals embraced liberty.

Keep dragging in these steaming irrelevancies, there’s a good lad. The subject is tobacco in New Zealand.

I tend to think that restricted substance laws are dumb ideas..but it's not really clear how adding tobacco to an already existing list of things that people in nz can't legally consume amounts to subjugation or tyranny. Is this one of those conditioning things, where we contend that taking away the smokes is just a prelude to the big show....?

I assume it's illegal to smoke crack, too, is this also part of turning people into subjects?

If you could just show me where ‘the right to smoke’ is enshrined, that’d be great.

They got a new law - that if you are born after a certain date - you can NEVER buy tobacco products....

 Really.

Didn't know that, and can't say I agree.  Kind of horse and barn door.

Here it's an offence to sell tobacco to persons under 18 years. Tobacco advertising is banned, even at point of sale. Tobacco packets must carry health warnings in large print. Plus full colour photos of one of the disgusting ailments tobacco can cause, such as cancer of the mouth.

Smoking is banned all government buildings, shopping centres, in all pubs, restaurants and cafes. Plus some out of door places such as the city Mall

Currently, a 25 stick pack of Marlboro Gold costs $AU48.50  ($US35.63)

Here the biggest demographic for new smokers is young females.

I'm not convinced banning a sector of the community from something will accomplish all that much. It's also unjust imo. I don't know the NZ constitution. Such a law may be unconstitutional .

However, in favour of something which will save millions in health costs.

Here in Oz, smoking culture has changed. The Mazda I bought new in 2019 has no ashtray. When going to private home, there's a good chance smoking will not be permitted and the smoker will have to go outside. Very different from when I started smoking in 1964 when you could smoke just about anywhere, including work, pubs and restaurants. (quit in 2003)
