RE: Russia and Ukraine

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Russia sends 10,000 naturalized citizens to frontlines in Ukraine

Bastrykin said the authorities have begun to implement the provisions of Russian laws that require persons who have received citizenship to register with the military and, if necessary, take part in the special military operation. He added that about 10,000 of them have been sent to the special military operation zone in Ukraine.

Russia has a large number of workers from Central Asian nations. But the move requiring military registration and deployment has reportedly led migrants to begin leaving Russia.

Kremlin sends migrants to dig trenches in occupied parts of Ukraine

Russian authorities have been using foreigners who have obtained Russian citizenship to help fight the war in Ukraine, Aleksandr Bastrykin, head of the Russian Investigative Committee, said Thursday.

Moscow “located” more than 30,000 foreign migrants who recently received Russian citizenship but did not register for the military in Russia, Bastrykin said.

Russian law enforcement agencies have reportedly been raiding factories and enterprises all across Russia, searching for legal and illegal migrants. During each raid, they issue military draft notices to the migrants, according to reports.

When will they send Snowden to the war already?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I wonder how that will work out for their immigration, even as they're trying to support an overaged populace. Pretty hard to draw young foreign workers in when they're liable to being drafted into an active war for a country they don't care about.

Battling Inflation, Russia Raises Key Interest Rate to 18 Percent

Russia’s central bank raised its key interest rate to 18 percent on Friday, the highest level in more than two years, in a sign of mounting concern in Moscow that the country’s wartime economy risked producing runaway inflation.

Elvira Nabiullina, the Russian central bank’s chairwoman, said the bank raised the rate by two full percentage points because “overheating in the economy has remained considerable.”

“Labor force and production-capacity reserves have been almost exhausted,” Ms. Nabiullina said.

A further cause for stubborn inflation, she added, were “risks related to external conditions,” saying that Russian companies were passing on the burden of sanctions to consumers in the form of price increases.

Russia, then, is running out of munitions, trained troops, and ready cash. It’s like the How To Lose A War trifecta.

They got the three foundational assumptions of the operation wrong, botched the execution, and are now executing the professionals who could not deliver the impossible in the aftermath of all that failure.

This confirmation that Putin is forbidding Russians from using Linux on their PCs.

I’m seeing tourist videos from Moscow and St-Petersburg. People are still going to their jobs and are having fun in cafes and nightclubs like there is no problem at all with the economy. The same thing is also happening in Iran. Sanctions are actually destroying the livelihood of ordinary citizens even further. But if you are close to the party, you just need to make a trip to Kazakhstan to buy your latest I-phone or other stuff like that.

Also: The F-16’s have started to arrive. 60 F-16’s may not be a lot against a Russian fleet that is 10 times that number. But the Ukrainians will not be able to take territory back from the Russians if they don’t start to establish some sort of air-superiority:

Quote:The first F-16s have arrived in Ukraine, finally giving Kyiv the venerable fourth-generation multirole fighter it has sought for over a year, according to multiple reports.

Bloomberg first reported the news, which was later reported by the Associated Press and Reuters.

“F-16s in Ukraine. Another impossible thing turned out to be totally possible,” Gabrielius Landsbergis, Lithuania’s foreign minister, wrote on social media.

Denmark and the Netherlands were due to provide the first jets, followed by Belgium and Norway—some 60 F-16s in total over the next few years. It is unclear how many F-16s have arrived in Ukraine if the reports prove accurate. NATO allies have indicated the process will be gradual, and Bloomberg and the AP reported Ukraine has received only a small number of F-16s so far.

The Pentagon and the National Security Council declined to comment on whether Kyiv now possesses F-16s and referred questions to Ukraine. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Even if Ukraine now has F-16s, many questions remain. U.S. and allied officials have not detailed maintenance plans for the jets or publicly revealed which munitions the aircraft will be equipped with.

Of course they're not going to reveal plans for maintenance or munitions.

My bet is that they'll be used to intercept Russian bombers over the Black Sea, and perhaps ground support when the next Ukrainian offensive kicks off.
