Vladimir Putin’s internet blackout is now “unprecedented in both scale and technical sophistication.” The crackdown has been “sustained and systemic, combining nationwide blackouts, selective service throttling, and targeted protocol interference.”

That’s the warning in a new report into “the Cost of Internet Shutdowns in 2025,” which found that Putin’s strategy had “pushed Russia to the top of the Cost By Country table, accounting for more than half of the total global economic impact recorded in 2025.”

In U.S. dollar terms, that “cost” is a staggering $11.9 billion hit to the Russian economy. To put that into perspective, Venezuela is second-placed, taking a much more modest $1.91 billion hit to its already ravaged economy.

Meanwhile, in Russia. Ukraines nightly bombing and sabotage campaign continues to wreck Russian infrastructure from the border front to the pacific coast, as the us seizes one shadow fleet tanker after another. No honor amongst thieves, I guess.

The daily cost in Russian lives remains at or above 1k on average. Putin remains a master strategist.
