Russia and Ukraine
RE: Russia and Ukraine
This might be the way the war ends. Attend:

-Ukraine fires missiles that kill two people in Poland, which is a NATO member.

-In response, Poland declares war on Ukraine.

-Ukraine immediately surrenders.

-Poland annexes Ukraine, which places all former Ukrainian territory under NATO protection.

-The next Russian attack on what used to be Ukraine triggers Article 5.

(I can dream, can’t I?)

Still, this whole thing reminds me of a 1984 Pop song by the German singer Nena called “99 Red Balloons”.

For millennials and younger people: The German version of the song is about some people releasing some balloon in the air (during the cold war period in Germany). Than one side replies with missiles. The other side sends it’s war planes, Than defense ministers thinking of their reputations decide to hit their red buttons and the whole thing will end how it ends.

The Song was released a short period after the coming of the movie called “The Day After” By the Director Nicholas Meyer on what a nuclear apocalypse would look like. Both medias were greatly appreciated by the young generations of that era and this led in turn to the de-escalation phase of the Cold Wars with many efforts being undertaken between Ronald Reagan and Michail Gorbatchev. So here is the Song :  Smile

During the cold war in a Russian bunker all the sirens went off saying the US had launched its warheads, the Russin satelites had detected multiple launches, the operator checked the machines they answered they were 100% sure the US had launched. He thought for a bit, there hadnt been any particular tension between russia and the US so he held off pushing the button that would destroy the planet. What the sattelites had detected was an unusual reflection of the sun off some rare clouds. If it wasnt for this man effectively not doing his job we'd all be dead now. 1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident - Wikipedia

Yes. I’ve heard about this incident in da TV Documentary. There is also a 2015 soap opera called “Deutschland 83” that features the life of a Stazi Spy in West Berlin with one episode featuring this particular event. It is in fact some sort of miracle that the east-block side decided to remain even tempered during this event so that each and every one of us have somehow managed to keep living long enough to witness the extremes of this post-soviet era tyrant Smile

Another great personality from the 80’s is Garri Kasparov who became world chess champion in 1985 and maintained his title until the year 2000. He is mostly known by my generation by beating a computer software called Deep Blue in 1996. The IBM engineers of Deep Blue have developed this machine further during one year and in 1997, Deep Blue became the first machine to beat a human world chess champion.

Kasparov has some interesting insights on the future of the war of Ukraine that I would like to share here:

Someone - I'm not sure who - has made the observation that if Russia stops fighting, the war will end. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine will end.

I saw an interview on German TV as a part of an interview that was itself a part of a series of programs on the period in the mid 80’s I was talking about and I found her incredibly good looking for her age (almost as if she had managed to physically remain in the 90’s even if not in the 80’s). Another such great musical personality (who isn’t that good looking) is Udo Lindenberg who still “rocks like the 80’s” like French Rock Singer Johny Hallyday who died in 2017.

Anyway. Rock’n’roll Good. Fighter Jets and Missile systems bad Smile

1. Yes that was the shortest crush ever.
2. That just means she's my age.
