Not really. Ukraine had no problem scrapping much better tanks. Sending these things out is just a mechanized version of a meat assault and the consequences of that have been horrific for russia at every point in the conflict with no exceptions. The smart play would be to use those forces as defensive reserves..and even then, they'd still be a massive drain on the more capable weapons systems russia still has in theater.

This is going to sound silly, but..I mean...russia....but I think the decision to send those tanks wasn't based on any military concern. It was a political one. Ukraine had more tanks in ukraine than russia. The tanks they're sending don't need to work, or even be a credible threat if they did work - they just need to be there for messaging. Russians have been raised on complete fairytales about those tanks and what they can do, they're culturally potent. Additionally, they need to be seen sending more stuff. Period. Doesn't matter what stuff. Doesn't matter why. More stuff.

That depends on what your enemy has to counter them. Their condition and if you have he logistics to maintain them. Otherwise all you have done is deployed target practice for the enemy or a logistical  albatross around your own neck.

Aug 4 (Reuters) - A Russian warship was seriously damaged in an overnight Ukrainian naval drone attack on Russia's Black Sea navy base at Novorossiysk, the first time the Ukrainian navy has projected its power so far from the country's shores.

The port, which handles 2% of the world's oil supply and also exports grain, temporarily halted civilian ship movement before resuming normal operations, according to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium which operates an oil terminal there.

Russia's Defence Ministry said a Ukrainian attack by two sea drones had been repelled in the waters outside the base and that the drones had been destroyed. It made no mention of any damage in its short statement.

A Ukrainian intelligence source said the Olenegorsky Gornyak, a Russian Navy landing ship with around 100 Russian servicemen on board, had been hit by a sea drone carrying 450 kilograms of TNT.

"As a result of the attack, the Olenegorsky Gornyak received a serious breach and currently cannot conduct its combat missions," the source told Reuters, adding that the operation had been carried out by Ukraine's Security Service and the navy. "All the Russian statements about a 'repelled attack' are fake."

Video footage verified by Reuters showed the Olenegorsky Gornyak being towed to shore by a tug, listing heavily to its port side.

I've seen the video of the ship under tow. It's badly damaged in the port quarter. For context, the ship is an amphibious assault transport, about 370 feet long, displacing 4000 tons at full load, and of 1970s vintage.

A "Ropucha", nothing special, but Novorossisk is on the Kuban, eaast of Crimea. This should further make the russians spread out their efforts to protect their assets.

   Like most Soviet monuments, this monument is incredibly ugly. Many old soviet monuments are being distorted or completely removed in many places in Eastern-Europe because all of these new democratic nations want to distance themselves from their Soviet past. I have some reserves on that attitude. I don’t see the Soviet Union as a “dark page” in history like the Third Reich etc. As see it as an ordinary page in history like monarchies, empires, colonial empires etc. Statues of colonialist / pro-slavery personalities have been desecrated in places in England and many street names bearing the names of colonialist personalities were removed and replaced by the names of African anti-colonialist resistants’ in Germany. But should we go ahead and destroy every monument / church / palace etc. that were built by ancient Kings and Emperors? I am not in favor of keeping all Soviet monuments. But for me, this statue was a symbol of resistance of a Communist / Socialist state against complete barbarians who were the Nazis. So I think it was simply better the old way. Maybe I would have built another bigger / better statue somewhere in Kyiv as soon as the war is over. This statue is simply ugly as hell

Let me see if I have this straight. You think that a country that has been invaded by another country should keep the invading country's monuments? As what? A reminder of the loss and destruction being caused?

But the statue isn’t being destroyed. The hammer and sickle on the shield is being removed.

You seem upset that the emblem of a country which no longer exists is being replaced by the emblem of a country that has been illegally invaded by the successor of the country who did the invading. You might do well to inform yourself about how Ukraine fared under the Soviet Empire.

Simply because the Soviets helped defeat the Nazis isn’t a justification for keeping Soviet symbols on display in Ukraine. Because, you know, recent events.
