They must have one hell of an ask in mind for americas first dictator.

Elon Musk (who is definitely psychotic in many ways) has recently said that “There is no way Ukraine is going to win this war”.

I think he has still a point on many issues: Russia has a gigantic war machine and the Landscape of Ukraine is mainly flat. So there are no jungles and marshes like Vietnam nor a large area with many mountains like in South-Eastern Turkey (where Kurdish Guerillas are fighting since more than 40 years).

Yet, where was this interesting interview yesterday on DW in which the presenter was asking a top Ukrainian official questions like “Does Ukraine have a plan B if Western support continues to diminish?”. One of the things the interviewee said was: “Russia has already lost when it attempted to take Kiev and destroy Ukraine in February 2022”.

Also, I don’t think not stopping Russia in Ukraine now is a good idea because of this:

There is a great documentary on the life of Alexei Navally on Amazon Prime (I didn’t see it yet but I’m going to) Smile

Elmo doesn't have a point, what he has are common interests.

Russia does not have a gigantic war machine,  The soviet union did.  Everything that russia has is in ukraine - and then some.  This is what they have to show for it.  Every field is a killing field sperated by dense treelines that make it difficult for vehicles to cut through - this was exploited to great effect in ww2 in ukraine.  Hardened industrial facilities from the cold war.  Then there's all of the rubble.  Pretty girls with hot food.  Their own murderous commanding officers.  Their fellow criminal conscripts.  Mud season.  Winter.  Smoking accidents.

End of the day, whatever disadvantages we imagine ukraine to have in comparison to other historic conflicts, they've inflicted historic losses.  Insurgencies are often even more lopsided than open conflict...so if this is what open conflict looks like.....

-and if they were smart, they'd have fucked off and built a better army for attempt number two.  Maybe they didn't do the smart thing because they can't.  Because..either for putin or for russia (or both) this is their only shot.

Anyone who's read history knows that Ukraine's geography (swamps in the north, mountains in the west) supported an insurgency and partisan activity against the German occupiers in WWII. Swamps in the north and northeast, mountains in the west, and a supportive populace spell disaster for the Russians, even if they win the military struggle. They will lose the "peace" ... because the Ukrainians will give them none.

Russians seem to have trouble with terrain of all sorts. Even Finland’s forests gave them a rough time.

^Good idea, especially given the recent sluggishness of US assistance.
