Ex-CIA officer Wiswesser has an interesting analysis on this war and Putin's plans:

Russia and China envy NATO because they have nothing comparable.
Russia abandoned Venezuela, has only a limited relationship with Iran, and only recently began joint air-defense exercises with China. NATO has trained together for 80 years.
