A Believer's Thoughts on Faith
RE: A Believer's Thoughts on Faith
i guess one is not held responsible for revelations not yet made.

One wonders how the deity formulates the schedule specifying who would be put into the world prior the revelation, and who would be put into it after the revelation, and who would be put Into a part of the world where the word of revelation could not possibly have gotten to.

well, i only hoped to remind the members here that to pursue faith doesnt have to involve shutting their eyes to any information they currently know, but i dont think i can make people really understand what i mean by this. so again, i'm sorry if i've offended anyone: that was not my intention. i may not be as active posting in the future.

You're sloppy apologetics will be greatly missed.

It does not matter what any of Us say to you -- yours is an answer in search of questions. You've signed your decision card, and everything that you encounter will be framed and reshaped in terms of your a prior commitments.

I don't think that faith is a worthwhile thing to pursue. It's an outcome for many people, but IMO it should never, ever be a goal.

That seems unfortunate.

All the best for your future endeavors.

Faith IS shutting eyes to information that is currently known.  At a fundamental level they each are the rejection of the other.   Only cognitive dissonance or intellectual lassitude make ceasefire feasible.  No lasting peace between them is possible.

in one of Belacqua's last posts he mentions the Taoist definition for God and i believe their definition and the Christian definition are very similar, maybe exactly the same.  do people not believe that all of the possible conceptions of God are referring to the same God?  i do: in case it helps, i believe Christianity is the "one true faith" because it combines the truths of all other religions and was meant to discontinue them so that we're unified under one faith.

If the christian god is true, then why aren't we all christian? It is all powerful after all.

And don't give me any of that "free will" nonsense either. A) Reading the bible will tell you that we're not supposed to have a will independent of god's will and b) as god is all knowing free will is anyways impossible (so is omnipotence by the way, but that's for a different thread as I am temporarily conceding a few attributes of god for the making of this argument).

As for your dream example, in scripture a dream isn't evidence, but a dream that predicts future events with 100% accuracy is. So if Jesus appeared to you in a dream and told you everything that would happen to you in the next week, and it happens, would you not consider that as evidence?

No, I would not consider that as evidence. Here’s why:

If Logar The Lord of Feces came to you in a dream and told you everything that would happen to you next week, and it happens, which is more likely - that Logar exists and you should worship his holy bowels, or that it was all an amazing coincidence?

Edit: If a Christian were to have the Jesus dream you described, I would be likely to chalk up the subsequent events as a self-fulfilling prophecy (which would make it not a ‘prophecy’ at all).

What we know for a fact (in your example) is that the probability of a coincidence of that magnitude occurring would border on the impossible, what we don't know for a fact, is that Logar doesn't exist.

Therefore is it far more likely that an entity you didn't know existed, exists, than a coincidence of mathematically impossible odds.

That's an interesting take. That long odds are somehow less probable than nonexistent gods. Meanwhile, people keep winning the lottery.
