Pride - the worst sin according to C.S.Lewis

RE: Pride - the worst sin according to C.S.Lewis
No more or less so than their torture totems.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I read about a third of The Screwtape Letters when I was in high school, but I've forgotten most of it. I have no doubt that it influenced me when writing Arwen's Journey: A Tale of Middle Earth, in that I named one of the story's villains Linner Wormwood.  Read

LMFAO CS Lewis, only seemed to use his brain, when he was first an atheist, I believe he was really young when he did this, like 15, then he stopped thinking when he regained his 'belief in a god' I mean talk about wanting a get rich idea 'such a highly regarded christian apologist.' Any job that involves religion is just a scam. Besides just studying it to write about how it's complete shit. I just always feel bad for when people give money to a religion, to do good, it's like no it's a get rich scheme.

I don't believe Lewis was ever an atheist. It was merely fashionable for him to call himself one at the time. More accurately, he was a rebellious, posturing, non-practicing theist.  Dodgy

I didn't have time to read all the posts prior to here, but I did read most. All I can say as a person who used to be a devoted Christian... Anything and everything under the sun that in any way promotes pleasure is anti fucking Christian. Pride makes people feel good, so the Christian Churches started condemning it.

A thought came to mind today that might summarize or expand what I've mentioned earlier: Pride is a status detector. It seeks to maintain a person's beliefs about their status in society. Thus why a proud person takes it as an insult to be treated as having a lower status than they perceive themselves to have. Nothing is more offensive to a proud person than to be treated as an equal to those around them.

In Christianity, pride is seen as a sin because it leads people to put themselves above God. It is because of pride that the Tower of Babel was destroyed - people cannot aspire to be gods. Apparently God requires obedience and subservience, and pride interferes with that.

Pride can be negative when it leads to Hubris and a lack of empathy for others. Otherwise, pride involves feeling good about yourself and about how others perceive you. It is mostly a good thing.

Pride is seen as a sin because deluded pride is merely folly but true pride implies that you actually have something of which to be proud.  And the mediocre can't stomach that.

Yet I feel/think/deduce that having pride in one's deeds and behaviour is central and fundamental to living a decent life. No pride = fail, basically.

I haven't read the book and most likely won't but I agree with you.  In fact, I think that pride is one of the three cardinal virtues needed for a successful and happy life.
