Pragmatically, anything is worth only what it accomplishes towards my goal. If it accomplishes nothing toward my goal, then it is worth nothing. If it hinders my goal greatly, it must be eliminated. If it is vital, it must be protected.
Whatever a society at large tends to view the worth of a life as is absolutely worthless pragmatically. I don't disagree about the intent of the big players behind the republican party though.
