Why is it irrational to believe that prisons are a good thing? If one can present rational reasons for them (such as segregating dangerous individuals from the rest of society), it's not an irrationality. Therefore, politicians would not need to be systemically irrational for prisons to exist.

Other than managing to bite your own arse, you (surprisingly) make a valid point: there are plenty of places in the world where prison reform is desperately needed. But that’s completely irrelevant to your stance that prisons may not exist.

FWIW, your use of the phrase ‘violent criminal’ is a red herring. Criminal - mentally ill or not - can be dangerous without being violent.
