2024 US Presidential Election
RE: 2024 US Presidential Election
(I am currently watching the Harris – Trump debate on youtube)
All populist + extreme right wing person around the world are obsessed with this migration issue. So Donald Trump is not the only one capitalizing on that. But:

1) This is a very ego-centric issue. Being in a country with between 2 and 5 million migrants, I agree that this is an issue especially for lower classes. Our borders are there for a reason after all. But still: I try not to forget that these are human beings.

2) The only real solution to that is to improve conditions “elsewhere”. Nobody can do it in one day. But I believe that making investments in democratic ideology (even when it involves military support) is a huge part of that puzzle.

Meaning: Russia (and China) are not only looking for expansion in Ukraine. They are also investing massively in Africa and even in South America. This type of 19th century mercantilism will only do to contribute more to the problem we are talking about. Besides: Many people from Russia and China are also migrating to the US because they can’t take it anymore.

I didn’t write these because I take anything Donald Trump said seriously. It’s just that I wanted to comment on this issue of migration Smile

One person, no surprise considering who he is, posted on FB that he's "not with her".

Let me ask you. Would you vote for the chump, were you a US citizen, since you don't take his rhetoric seriously? You'd just accept the rest of it? Help me out here.

Republicans claiming Trump had all the best truths as though we were not all watching the same debate.

It's a known phenomenon that his cult followers will cheer at the most inane and illogical tripe (no insult meant to tripe) that he utters. I remember (from the 2016 elections) where he said, "I have the words" <crowd gets excited> "the best words" <crowd goes crazy with cheering>. They will pick up the chaff and leave the grain lying on the ground. It's truly insane.

One of the things I appreciate about Harris is her approach to this problem. It was not short-term, give 'em good numbers stuff; she tried to address root causes. Successful? No. But that's not because the thinking is flawed, it's because she was thinking long-term and that doesn't play to headlines.

I think investing in the stability of our neighbors is a good thing. How to make it work right, that's a discussion. But it seems obvious to me that people only flee unstable areas. Investing in their stability seems apt.

I have to say, though, that supporting the spread of democracy should probably avoid any appeal to military force.

The debate was broadcast live in german TV and the participants were "dubbed" by "Live-translators". The guy who did Trump does this for quite some time now, he already dubbed Obama in live TV. Deja, so his name, stated that "Trump has a very limited vocabulary and a limited set of ideas". It is still "a challenge to translate Trump live, since he is hard to anticipate. In the middle of a sentence he usually veers off into another idea or a not-yet-spoken insult". Deja complained about "psychological hygiene". He sais its "uncomfortable, since his blabber is running through my system (during translation)".
" I stopped fact checking (in terms of *did he really just say that?*) Trump, because he actually does say the most insane bs".

RE: 2024 US Presidential Election
Quote:Republican pollster Frank Luntz predicted former President Trump’s performance in the Tuesday night debate will ultimately cost him the election in November.

In a Wednesday interview on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” Luntz criticized the GOP nominee’s performance and pointed to specific moments in the debate against Vice President Harris that he noted were particularly negative.

“It was a pretty negative performance. Pretty pessimistic, cynical, contemptuous,” Luntz told Morgan in the interview, highlighted by Mediaite, adding, “and I think that this will cost him, yes.”

Luntz hesitated, appearing to choose his words carefully.

“I’m trying to decide if I want to go on record, and the answer is yes,” he continued. “I think that — that he loses because of this debate performance.”

I'm not sure I agree with Luntz, but his focus groups are usually pretty spot-on. I do hope he's right.
