To Atheists: Who, in your opinion, was Jesus Christ?
|
I'm afraid it's tough for me to get past how mean he was to that fig tree.
I think he’s a character in an establishment myth or legend. Like Moses, or Paul Bunyan.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I see you’ve added ad populum to your list of committed fallacies. That aside, I’m sure there was at least one Jewish troublemaker called Yeshua who flourish in the first century, but you won’t learn anything about him by reading the Bible. Boru

Hoo boy. You sure have swallowed a lot of misinformation.
I think that, given the available evidence, it is impossible to know who or what Jesus Christ was. That being the case, we likely must look to guides outside the evidence to decide what to believe. RE: To Atheists: Who, in your opinion, was Jesus Christ?

A mentally diseased unscrupulous megalomanic with no discernible redeeming traits, who happen to have been found to be suitable for use by other diseased meglomaniacs to rule through superstition. If he had been born into wealth, he would have tried hard to be the Donald Trump of 1st century AD. Although I doubt the local or the Roman administration would have dealt with his shenanigans any less harshly.

I lean about 51% towards an apocryphal wonder-working rabbi once a follower of John the Baptist whose activities ticked off the Romans enough for them to execute him and on whose sayings Christianity is partly founded (I think it's more fair to call it Paulianity than Christianity based on their proportional contributions) having actually existed. I don't think he performed real miracles and I don't think all the sayings attributed to him were actually his. What he really said and did is unknowable at this point, but I don't think he really claimed to be more or less a son of God than anyone else. Since I don't have to take the Bible 'as gospel', I presume the sayings and deeds I like have some value and the ones I don't like or don't make sense didn't happen or were done by someone else or indicate that the lessons of Jesus aren't everything they're cracked up to be. PS: Welcome to te forum! If you haven't made an intro thread yet, I'd be interested in reading it when you do.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

Personally on AF, I myself do not engage in discussions about historical accuracy because I go, generally, with the scholarly concensus, that Jesus was cruxified by Pontious Pilate and that the disciples believed they witnessed him alive after 3 days. It is perhaps the most thoughouly documented ancient biographical accounts created within living memory of the reported events. Those are just basic facts. People who think Jesus was a mythological creation are ignorant beyond words.
