Supposedly, Trump decided to take credit for Osama Bin Laden's assassination. Now, I've looked at the actual clip where he said it. While his claim isn't quite as brazen as people claimed it was, it's still fairly stupid. 





It seems his claim is slightly more reasonable: that in his 2000 book The America We Deserve, he warned about how we need to take out bin Laden, and that, since he did so over a year before 9/11, he was ahead of the curve. 

The actual (and only) refernce to bin Laden in the book: 

One day we're told that a shadowy figure with no fixed address named Osama bin-Laden is public enemy number one, and U.S. jetfighters lay waste to his camp in Afghanistan. He escapes back under some rock, and a few news cycles later it's on to a new enemy and new crisis.

As for him being ahead of the curve, while I can't be sure about how well-known bin Laden was prior to 9/11 among the general population (seeing as I was eleven at the time), he was already notorious among the government by this time, as in,"by the time the book was published, he was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list" notorious.

I'd heard of him well-before. IIRC I first heard of him with the suicide-boat attack on USS Roberts (correction; it was the twin embassy attack in Sudan and another country). The name was in the public sphere if you were paying attention.
