I should rephrase myself. trump is both idiot and fascist and being fascist obviously makes him piece of shit. To include wider context I don't think that he is under russian influence as aforementioned traits perfectly explain his actions.

I suspect he also wants to make sure the US maintains its ban on Chinese vehicles.

Yes, that makes sense. Musk is making a show of cutting agencies, while the car ban is more of a trade/commerce thing. So far (as I understand it) he isn't directly working on any of the tariff or import/export stuff. 

It looks as though the reasons given publicly for blocking Chinese car sales have to do with security concerns. As if Chinese goods aren't already everywhere. But the desire to give a sales advantage to US companies wouldn't be unusual, and would be in line with other things Trump says he'll do. I hope Elon doesn't get to be in the room for those deliberations.
