You realize of course that the entire Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, right?
What laws do you imagine are being violated by Iran’s control over the Strait?

Arguments can be made (and actually are) for Iran actions being illegal, but arguments also can be made (and actually are) for reverse. If you're interested in lengthy piece discussing it then I have a link:

According to Art.
37-38 of UNCLOS Iran does
not have the power to deny ships passage through the straits. Iran has signed this treaty.
HOWEVER
Iran never ratified UNCLOS

But two wrongs dont make one right.
It seems UNCLOS reserves any nation under attack (like Iran) the right to defend itself, including in national waters (12mi) and respond with proportional means. This is exactly where i have to agree with Irans blockade being "illegal". The reaction to block the straits for everyone while being attacked by the USA, this i would consider to be disproportionate.

I dont see why that justifies attacking ships of nations which had not attacked Iran, ships of nations who refused to join the attack on Iran even.
No, i dont really see why random nations trading with USA makes it legal for Iran to attack their ships.

Ironically enough, neither has the US.

To paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, ‘You use the leverage you have, not the leverage you might want or wish to have at a later time.’ The Strait is Iran’s leverage.
It’s been observed that the first casualty of war is the truth. It might be apt to name the second casualty as legality.

There's bullshit on all three sides here. What Israel and America have done is illegal. What Iran has with the Strait done is illegal. All three governments are odious. I feel worst for the Iranian populace caught in the middle.
