Five Things She Doesn't Like About Atheists
#11
RE: Five Things She Doesn't Like About Atheists
I don't think atheism could be credibly described as a way of life - and that thing is itself what the person in the op seems to be frustrated by. If atheism wants this, or wants that, then it would have to do x y or z, and is failing at x y and z, is pretty much the chorus at every point. The problem (for her at least) being that atheism doesn't want this or that.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Well, most of us would prefer that we weren't reviled to the point where it is almost impossible for an open atheist to be elected to public office. Some of that comes from religious bigotry and there isn't much we can do about that. The intellectual snobbery thing plays a big role though and that is something we can do something about.

She may have left her religion behind, but man, is she clinging to her broad brushes.

Yeah, I don't agree with everything she says but the intellectual snobbery thing really resonated with me. I've been plenty guilty of it in the past and I still have to guard against it.

She made this video because of frustrations over intellectual snobbery on the part of many atheists. Also a lack of empathy from life-long atheists who have no experience ever being indoctrinated themselves. She also gives a well thought out opinion on why the levels of secularism seen in many Nordic countries are probably not realistic in the US as it is now.

I urge everyone take the time to watch this, especially if you sometimes have thoughts of intellectual snobbery towards theists. I bet most of us do. It's also good to see where the other side is coming from and how our attitudes can and do damage our reputation.

Everything she says is entirely reasonable. It should be self-evident.

She's saying that intelligent and honest people may disagree. She's saying that there are good and bad people on both sides. She's saying that empathy is a good thing.

Naturally fanatics on both sides will find reasons to reject these ideas.

I think that most people who feel that way would probably benefit from joining a club or cause. People who believe in gods join clubs and causes for the same reason.

LoL, "atheist fanatic". I wonder how that looks like.

But it's just another sound bite from Belacqua.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
