Prayer ... SERIOUSLY?!

For the record ... you can call me whatever insulting name you wish. It's impossible for persons I don't respect to injure me with their words.

Nonsense, I made a claim that I have heard several historians make including Dr. Keman whom I cited earlier. I also demonstrated how the math made this very possible. So for you to claim I was somehow being dishonest is ridiculous.

Why would I do that? Calling someone names isn't funny, it adds nothing of merit to one's own argument, and quite frankly it is juvenile. I actually like you; you have an inquiring mind which is always a good thing in my book.

Yeah, I don't think you like me at all. I think you're attempting to come off as a martyr right now because Shell B was a tad rough with you. Please, spare us that melodrama. All of us who are passionate about religious issues get beat up a little here and there, it's just the way it is. I do to. You gotta let it bounce off. Example - Frodo hates me, and tack's not too fond of me ... and I have no problem with that. I will still occasionally even give both those men kudos here and there.
It's not a christian thing. Yes, we think christians are wrong, that's a given, but you'll notice the majority of us don't hate tackattack, and I'm sure quite a few of us would say that we like the man.
It's not cause you're a christian Statler, it's you.
You only seem to have actual discussions with those who are in agreement with you. The reason why people explode and call you names is because you see what you want to see and you draw your own conclusions and justify them with your own brand of "logic". It's not a conversation (or even a debate) with you, it's a lecture. Even now, you'll probably interpret this to be some kind of irrational rant.

You want people to stop calling you names and give you some respect. Fuckin earn it. Nobody here expects you to agree with them all the time ... we do know you're a christian. They do expect you to offer up legitimate arguments that are not subject to your own brand of rationale and most importantly, not turn one's words around to suit your own agenda. Here's a final idea: Try telling someone you generally disagree with that they may have a valid point. Maybe, and this is a BIG maybe, you can salvage the shitty reputation you've given yourself.

"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Why do you forget or ignore the fact that a Christian is someone who by definition has had Christ atone for all of their sins? So they are not “doomed” at all.

So you can murder without worrying because Christ has saved you from your sins already. Kinds shits in your argument about Mao and Stalin murdering millions because they were atheists, when you could do the same and Christ will forgive you!

A single hand working can do more than a thousand in the field picking grass.

Secondly I would think part of not taking gods name in vain would be do not be disingenuous with your prayers just because your too lazy to think of one that currently fits.

Thirdly if your going to thank him when you are suffering have the humility to thank him for humbling you by making you lose your job so you could see the error of your ways. God is all powerful and you losing your job was part of a higher plan. This again goes to not asking for anything because your understanding is flawed.

Note: I am not a Christian but my parents tried to raised me one and I'm fairly sure most if not everything I said could be backed up with very specific Scripture.

Not really!

Got to love GC's reasoning here Wink

You will be able to find a verses from the bible to back up those points about prayer but you will also find ones to refute it. The bible is just too full of contradictory passages.

No, like I was saying earlier, once a person receives saving grace their whole life changes. They begin to do their best to follow the teachings of Christ and living an obedient life. Everyone slips up and makes mistakes; everyone has thoughts that are sinful. A Christian still struggles with these things, but that is just it, it is a struggle. Someone who murders and kills others because they think they have a ‘get out of jail free card’ obviously is not displaying the genuine faith and good works that are a result of saving grace. Do I know for sure who is and is not part of the elect? Not at all, but scripture does give us some signs we’d expect to see from someone who has been saved.
