Actually the mechanism in question isn't all that amazing. That there is a mechanism, sure...that's pretty sweet. Most of the things a plant does are actually mechanical responses, we've been botanists for nearly 10k years. In fact, by the time the bible was written, we commanded in immense body of knowledge pertaining to agriculture and had hybridized nearly all modern crops from a small handful of parent flora. Ag wasn't a mystery to the people of the bronze age, they were actually becoming quite good at it, the first "green revolution" was about to go down.
