I've read somewhere (maybe here) that "camel" was a mistranslation of the (Greek / Aramaic?) word for "rope". Either way, there are some deluded revisionists @ Conservapedia.
According to Wikipedia: Some claim that "camel" is a Greek misprint; that kamilos (camel) was a misprint of kamêlos, meaning "rope" or "cable". That would resolve the mixed metaphor problem while still stating the impossibility for someone with worldly wealth to enter heaven.
Of course, that said, I've actually heard that even with that interpretation, it is apparently supposed to show not that it's impossible for a rich man to get into heaven, but that it's merely very hard.

You know I can't help but have a giggle when someone claims that this verse has anything at all to do with heaven. Even if we used the pedestrian gate translation. We are only left with a description of a very effective security policy when trying to protect any enclosed area, the policy of narrow entrances. Honestly, doesn't sound like a metaphor to me, sounds more like a procedural.

And, of course, there is no evidence before the ninth century AD that such a place called "the eye of the needle" even existed. I think it had something to do with the popes' getting rich.

The friend is a political science major who has such an obsession with Orwell, when he got baked about six months ago on salvia, he hallucinated a 30 feet tall George Orwell with spotlights for eyes warning him that the highwayman he was seeing in the field was dangerous. He wound up chasing this Orwell hallucination through like three fields until another friend tackled him to the ground.
I think that story is bullshit as well..everytime I ever did Salvia I melted into the chair and became one with the furniture. The idea of running while peaking on Salvia doesnt sound right to me.

Yeah, Salvia is rather disabling in every instance I've observed and heard of. People collapse pretty fast on Salvia.

Quote:the rich son Andy Shlafly explains:
"The "needle" was the very narrow pedestrian portal in the larger city gate. In order to pass, the camel must lower itself. Similarly, in order to pass the gates of heaven, a man must bow. "
The city was leveled by Hadrian in 135 AD in order to build a new Roman colony "Aelia Capitolina." Apparently, that makes it easy to simply invent whatever shit the xtian fuckhead needs in order for his book to be less stupid.

I tried it once and it was only the 10x extract. I had to stop part way through because I was going to fall flat on my face. That shit is completely incapacitating. Of course this was awhile after I had lost my extreme tolerance to all substances. There was a time in my life when I could have given Keith Richards a run for his money.

This isn't the first time Orwell will be misrepresented by conservative nutjobs, nor will it be the last. Even though Orwell's perpetual crusade against communism got rather annoying after a while, his prophecies are coming true.
Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann are rewriting histroy regarding America, such as the infamous "don't take away our guns" and dubious "George Washington & Co. worked tirelessly to end slavery" rubbish. Not to mention Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the talk show hosts on the EIB Networ (WABC Radio) are constantly repeating the "Two Minutes Of Hate" in Nineteen Eighty Four. On a less important note, I believe that Mr. Orwell opposed communism because it made socialism look bad.

That isnt less important. That is VERY relevant to the situation. Anybody with a working knowledge of politics understand the differences between socialism and Communism. Orwell was anti-authoritarian and socialistic. Communism came out as an authoritarian form of socialism. Of course Orwell is going to expose it for all its short comings...these under educated right wingers merely take the text for face value (something they accuse liberals of doing for their writtings and spokespersons) and consider him to be anti-socialism and therefore (stranglely) the equal of a modern day GOD..er..GOP right winger.
