Atheists: Can you disprove the resurrection or Jesus' existence?

Not that particular one, but I have read some put out by the Rosicrucians.

The TOPIC is crackpot fringe.

I just took the trouble to spend a few minutes on Google. Perhaps next time you might like to consider doing the same. I could not find any reference to the book or the author on Wikipedia, always a worry. I discovered the author self publishes loony books.

I've taken the stance that skeptics, unless they are personally well versed in ancient pagan mythology, shouldn't waste any time or credibility putting forth any parallels between Jesus and earlier pagan myths. I've gone there and regret doing so.

The fact is that Christians have never told a coherent, internally consistent story, never mind offered any evidence that would meet the burden of proof for their, to put it politely, extraordinary claims.

The burden of proof is on them. I think they love to debate things that Murdok puts out there because, with a little mental slight of hand, they can try to shift the burden of proof. Suddenly the skeptic is expected to prove that the Christians ripped off earlier pagan myths.

My new stance: Stick with the Bible. Make them explain their own story. Make them account for all the contradictions. Make them bring their own proof for their own outlandish claims. I'm still waiting for them to do any of these things.

What contradictions? lol. Let's be honest, no ones even going to have a discussion with you if anything you say gives them a picture of the bible, or the people involved, that differs from the view that they have pinned their understanding of all life upon. They would argue against their own mother's existence if it appeared to contradict what they believed the bible said.

Oh for fuck sake! Not THAT drivel yet AGAIN! --and who has been watching Zeitgeist?

ROFLOL

The Horus/ Jesus argument has been thoroughly debunked. Look it up,for goodness sake.

This is pure crackpot fringe stuff, appealing to the half-educated ,with a limited capacity for rational thought.

I'm not sure that you have point here. Not that I subscribe to the Horus/Jesus theory, but it's quite known that different cultures came into contact, and besides the normal trade of goods took place, ideas were also exchanged. We find many traits in these stories from culture to culture, continent to continent. A god born out of a virgin for instance is found in Greek and Roman mythologies. The idea of resurrection is found in so many diverse religions/cultures. The Jews of those ancient times were not isolated that they just couldn't borrowed from other cultures. They waged wars, traded with their neighbors, and some of them even dared to seek employment in other lands. That we now discovered that there are parallels between Horus, Mithra and Jesus should not surprise us.

The lack of sources quoted in the article is a huge worry and a cursory search on the matter finds it's mostly crap and at best, heavily interpreted to fit the argument. Not a good one.

The article was interesting so I checked some more and found

http://www.amazon.com/Christ-Egypt-Horus...385&sr=1-1

"Murdock cites more than nine hundred scholarly sources and primary texts which includes thousands of footnotes, around 60 illustrations, and a 36 page long bibliography. "

Of course the argument might be drivel anyway but in this book at least there doesn't appear to be any lack of sources. Smile Has anyone read it?

No. But I have read this one.

The thing is. Anyone who has had a serious look at ancient religions and has not seem the plagiarism that was going on back then, is just living in the delusion that a miracle working super absentee God is.

I apologize or not reading all 12 pages in full...but who the hell struts around with their chest puffed out confidently...because their best argument is an unfalsifiable statement?

I teach my kids in class my coveted ISUT..."Invisible Space-Unicorn Theory".

I developed the theory that the Earth spins (scientifically verifiable) atop the mighty horn of an invisible space unicorn. I then show them a picture of the Earth from the moon, and say, "SEE!!! Of course not...it's invisible, thus proving I am correct".

I use this as an intro to teaching about bias, and unfalsifiable statements.

It's pretty effective...and maybe one day, some of them will make the cnnection with their own religion...who knows.
