Respect in the face of ignorance?

The reaction I got from the forums on my first real thread was one of "you're an idiot go away".

So this forum transformed you from a n00boleon to a Napoleon? Cooooool.

Pretty fucking much Rayaan, I used to watch documentaries on the history channel thinking they were the real deal. Soon as I came on here though it completely changed my tune to that stupid channel. The only thing it's good for is Pawn Stars.

Have to agree Nap & raayan. There is so much info and cool people on this forum who treat you like an adult (read uni student). They won't spoon feed you but they will (like all good friends should) tell you when you are being a complete and utter dick with your posts!!

I (personally) find the lack of PC rather refreshing and more helpful than the ambiguous PC crap I usually find on other forums.

Yeah, for some of us (including myself) there is a greater enjoyment in reading and posting in forums than watching documentaries.

I'm not a fan of Pawn Stars either. My 3 younger brothers like to watch it, though.

I do watch documentaries on channels like the Discovery Channel and PBS for example - especially nature, space, and animal documentaries - but not as much as before. Maybe 10 times less than before. Now, I realize that I can learn things from the internet and I find it more stimulating to do research on the internet or even read an interesting book that I can learn from. Almost everything in the television is boring to me these days. But, in a forum, I can talk about deeper and mysterious things such as the existence of God, afterlife, the universe, reality, and so many other things whenever I feel like it.

Exactly, I don't think anyone here is discouraging that. Which is the way it should be.

Indeed, the absence of political correctness on this forum is wonderful. I was just on another forum yesterday where a thread was closed because people were debating...

And then it was deleted, despite 75% of the posts in it being solid and constructive posts Undecided

Which is fantastic when you go looking for the thread a few hours later to quote a fantastic one-liner Angry

Gods I hope we never see a thread closed because the forumgoers need to be coddled.

Deeper, mysterious, thought-provoking, amazing, AND important ... and a few more adjectives ... for me at least.

I'll add my two cents as a newbie if you like ..... give you a fresh perspective.

My opinion maybe or may not be of particular interest seeing as how I'm 80% athiest, 20% theist if you wanna call it that, being a Deist and all .....

The bad -

Some of you here come across as absolutley flaming ignorant, especially when someone has a different opinion to your own.

In my short time here which now feels like forever as has been the ordeal, I've had grammar nazi's, people who discount what you say before you've even finished saying it, people who think you must be dumb because you believe in God, I've witnessed and experienced mob rule even if it is one of your mob who's acting like a tw*t.

So yes the welcome and treatment of newbies could do with improving.

Alot of newbies don't have either the thick skin or ability to give back like I do especially if their Christians and you use dismantling their biblical beliefs as a tool to make them look stupid which is fkin uncalled for (whether I think it's stupid or not).

Let alone for e.g that the grammar issue may be because some people are at work and are speed typing before their boss catches them on the net, maybe believing in God is not so dumb if it or a power in this crazy, complex universe is real etc etc.

I know some of you will be reading this open mouthed thinking "Well DD you've had yer fking moments" true I have.

My initial vielded answers on the "Big Bang isn't valid" thread was as you now know perfectly reasonable considering my aims, there was a structure I tried to initiate to help me with my research and it crumbled because some of you would not play ball.

Also frustrating is when I resolve something with one or two forum members just to have another random member come out of nowhere who hasn't even kept up with the conversation continue to give insults out of mob mentallity.

A lot of you have highlighted my off the cuff comments and remarks and wonder why I treat some of you with a vielded disdain or sarcasm, it is because if your going to act like as*hats I'm going to treat you such, If you think you can bully me with mob rule and expect me to crumble you've met your match, If you think I'm a kid you can look down on "surprise I'm an adult" (not that I have not told you this).
This forum is not the be all and end all of my life so if your going to get into name calling and expect me to keep a straight face and straight laced serious attitude forget it.
I say things on here which I don't even mean if I'm in a funny mood, if you take it the wrong way even wehn I've told you I'm not being serious then more fool you.

The good -

Some of you here are intelligent and interesting enough to debate with and there are some nice ones scattered around in amongst the rabble.

Once you take your heads out of the mob mosh pit half of you are actually really cool, look at Minimalists first posts to me (the very 1st one) I thought straight away "dick" but now I get him and find his dry humour appealing and funny (in other words it wasn't personal he does this to everyone), Rythem wasn't as bad but was still a bit of a wind up but I think me and the bunny have turned a corner (he's the only one I've given a pet name to ahhh), I tried to give Deist Paladin a pet name but it came out as "DP" so I won't use that often.

Shell's cool (A Mod plus teaching me grammar which kind of feels like she has this dominatrix thing over me), CoxRox is great, theVOID could have a lot of good conversations with, Fred and Salty are funny and up against it, I'm trying to convert Telsa to Deism so me DP and CinJin have more numbers ..... plus quite a few more are cool.

Napoleon I could have included you but as I'm being paranoid and feel you had me in mind when you made this thread I'll reserve judgement.

...... this is just my view as a newb, I'm not looking for returns on my conduct or behaviour as I'm sure it's not perfect although I do try to be serious when I'm supposed to be.

This is purely my self entitled opinion, I know my retractors will be itching to have a go at me but this is not the thread for it. Smile
