firstly, these poverty stricken nations don't have a police
so every family has a weapon in one form or another--- you have to protect your family and assets somehow

Swords were usually a symbol of some sort of authority, royal blood, or wealth. In some cases, it was death for a member of the peasant caste of a society to carry such.

I would agree everyone had a knife of some sort, but those were all purpose tools. Not everyone had a sword and was trained to it, despite what movies might tell you.

I meant it as a tool for protection.

In may ancient empires... the Romans, Greeks, Persians, ...etc. would train the young boys to be skilled with the sword--- just so they can protect their community in case of war.

Of course there are some poor peasants who couldn't afford it. But I'm sure they had some other tool to fend off enemies.

From what I remembered... I was merely describing the laws and systems some of these countries implemented as a punishment for adultery. And the type of logic they have. I don't recall giving you my opinion on this issue.

Please go ahead and post a link where I said "stoning is the greatest punishment anyone can think of for adultery".
