Yes, Saul invented the notion of an eternal hell.,it is not a Jewish belief. ( I asked at an on-line yeshiva)

I agree with GC (except for the part about his idea of "justice").

Points for honesty - you're both admirable men - but now I feel like getting right back in the shower I just exited and using an S.O.S. pad.

Not really relevant, I suppose, but we were always told that separation from god was supposed to be "hell" enough and eventually the soul would shed its bad ways and get to God anyway.

Interesting; a Passionist priest once defined hell to me as "that place where god is not"

I've heard some Christians define it that way. I'm not giving it as a solid example of Jewish beliefs - there tends to be some variance amongst the sects - but that's what they told us as kids at the Conservative temple I attended. It had rather fluid membership because it catered to military families, so I imagine there was a lot of crossover.

If I implied that one would go to hell for not believing in justice I'm sorry. The reason that one will be in hell is for the rejection of Christ. Let's look at this first from the side of injustice, of coarse you will need to assume that God is real, Christ sacrifice on the cross for man was not justice it was love, it was a necessary injustice in absolute love. One of the most important reasons for the OT was to show that man represented by the Jewish nation would never be just, even though God had made His presence known to them. God giving His Son as a sacrifice for sinful man was not creating a kind of justice, He was making justice for mankind easier to have than trying to obtain it through the Law of Moses. Again the OT is proof that man could not obey God and be found righteous and just in the sight of God, so the unjust act became necessary so that I as all of mankind could find the salvation ie. redemption God desires for all mankind. So those who accept Christ as their savior and sacrifice there lives to Christ in obedience, love and working for Him, this is belief, are rewarded with eternal life with the one they have loved. For God to allow nonbelievers into heaven would not serve as justice toward the believers who sacrificed and believed. Now, for the nonbelievers, God gives them what they want, they reject Christ and choose to not love Him and sacrifice for Him, if God would allow them into heaven and be with One they chose to despise this for nonbelievers would not be justice for them. So hell was created for nonbelievers so they would not have to be around Christ who they choose to despise, they are allowed to live forever and continue to despise, curse and ect. the God they rejected. The greater the rejection ie, sins the greater their hatred for God and the greater their misery, so the ones who were the worse will be more miserable, so God gives justice within the nonbelievers. This may not make sense, I can see it clearly in my mind, it's hard sometimes for me to explain things. If you have further questions please ask and I'll try to explain the best I can.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

How can you despise a non existent thing? You said non believers despise christ - no they just do not believe he was the son of god.

Anytime an explanation for anything begins with "first, you will need to assume" it's gonna be straight garbage. If it were so, we wouldn't need to assume, and whatever explanation you're going to offer should be able to stand up on it's own without some elaborate set of assumptions. Don't correct GC when he tells you what other people are doing or thinking btw, probably a sin.
