I know other people are hopping on the gas, but what I find really cool is that a quasar lit it up.

Read a bit about quasars and why they're so damn cool.

They're so damn bright, that the sheer amount of lumens inside it's galaxy must sterilize a fair portion of life, at least that which is on the surface. It is hard to imagine a planet with enough cloud cover to absorb enough of the radiation and not be vaporized in the process.
