Since the world is divided - not even remotely equally - between atheists and theists, and since theists are already convinced of the existence of their pet god, they're not the demographic likely to be surprised if the character shows up. And since having one or more gods show up and be proven to be such would be overwhelming and indisputable, holding a position of atheism at that point would be silly. Are we in agreement?

An atheist simply isn't convinced by evidence. A Muslim generally follows the doctrine that anyone who isn't a Muslim deserves to have a lesser afterlife, possibly involving torture, just because they aren't a Muslim.

An atheist doesn't generally consider anyone deserves any form of punishment after death.

How exactly is that preferable?

I'd still go with atheist over adragonist.
At least with dragons, you could try and form one out of dinosaur bones. So there'd at least be some type of actual physical evidence (however twisted and manipulated) of their existence, as opposed to deities which so far have left no direct physical evidence of themselves.

I've seen indisputable proofs and not everyone accepts it. For example, the earth being much older then young earth creations belief in how many years old it is. Some people don't accept it. I've seen indisputable proofs regarding the Shia position being right and Sunnis being wrong regarding succession of the Prophet and divine leadership, yet Sunnis don't accept it.

My experience with humans is they demand proof and when presented with it, often don't accept it, if it's not what suits their desires.
