In reality Mary wasn't an actual woman but a metaphor for Samaria. Samaria had never produced a prophet for the Jews, represented by Joseph. So Mary (Samaria) was a virgin. Later on in the fairy tale the Jews accused Jesus of being a Samaritan and he blew them off. He certainly acted like a Samaritan since he was always hanging out on the nearest hill like he was a mountain goat.
BTW, only idiots think that ghosts (spirits) have sex with women and produce babies.
