RE: Harris' take on the recent events in Paris
What other reasons? Isn't it for self-defense only?

Well, here he talks about guns.

No, Grasshopper. There are more than one reason to study a martial art.

Not only that even if it were not a Martial Art: it's good for health and fitness.

Well, yes, but I would imagine self-defense is the main purpose of martial arts. You wouldn't practice it for any other reason if you didn't need to defend yourself.

What about Tai Chi?

Well, ok, but we were initially talking about brazilian Jiu-Jitsu not about other forms of martial arts.

And again, even with Tai chi, in a world where you wouldn't need it, it wouldn't even exist, at least not in that form.

Yeah well you made the argument that the purpose of Martial Arts overall was for self-defence.

Yeah Jiu-Jitsu is primarily self defense but when I heard him talk about it on a podcast he talked a lot about other reasons and I don't even remember much about him talking about the primary reason being self defense. He talked about how it made him more healthy and disciplined a lot IIRC. So basically, that's why I didn't think of Jiu-jitsu as a reason for him having to protect himself.

Of course it's to protect himself. I don't think he would have to spell that out, and apparently neither does he.
