Private Prison Complex receives terrible news.

RE: Private Prison Complex receives terrible news.
Don't expect them to take this lying down.  I'm sure that checks are being written to the republicunt party so that they can get more corporate loving scumbags in office to reverse this decision.

If you really want to turn your stomach, you should check out some of the ipos and marketing material where they reference the low cost of labor and amenable population density overages allowable by state or local mandate..and the no-cost granted construction funds available as a reason to opt in on their prisons as a shareholder.

"Hey yall, there's a bunch of free money over here, and tons of poor people to do the work for us.  We've got the officials in our pocket, and all we have to do is cram people into a cement box asshole to elbow, then make sure they stay there as long as possible."  Wink

My dear Rhythm - I'd call you a cynic if not for the fact that all of that bullshit is true.

I see. But won't it lead to overcrowded government prisons? I admit I've never been in prison but it's not hard to imagine what would happen when space becomes insufficient with too many people inside and limited resources.

I'd say we can address that issue by not locking up people for "crimes" that don't warrant being locked up for - an d applying those standards to people regardless of the hue of their skin.

Well, without speaking for Rhythm, that's probably because many people simply don't belong there in the first place. World's largest prison population and the incentive of making the American justice system more punitive that reformative. There are people imprisoned for something that would get you a slap on the wrist,, community work or a fine in most other western countries.

Oh, you're a judge now?

Got an informed opinion on what you can go to prison for in the States? Care to inform yourself on it? If not, I take the above statement for what it is. There are statistics on the American prison population, you know. You could look them up - if you find the time.

Yes, I am informed on what you can go to prison for across the pond. America is vastly different compared to Europe, so what?

Which was the whole point I was making. So what indeed.

At present the checks have been written to all sides, at all levels of government. Considering that Clinton's platform supposedly takes a stand against private prisons (which she has a long history of supporting..and which has handsomely supported her), and the improbability of a President Donald...I'd worry more about -those- checks. They've been purchasing access, it's difficult to imagine that they don't intend to use what they've already payed for...and the Clinton campaign has -incompetently- tried to sweep this under the rug by refunding only the smallest and most visible of these contributions.

Old news.

Quote:Despite the refunds, Clinton campaign continues to benefit handsomely from the fundraising assistance of some closely connected to the private prison business. In another report filed Sunday night, the campaign disclosed that Richard Sullivan of Capitol Counsel—until recently, a Raleigh, N.C.-based federally registered lobbyist for the for-profit prison operator GEO Group—bundled $69,363 in donations for Clinton in the fourth quarter, bringing his total for the year to a whopping $274,891.
That makes Sullivan the second-most prolific lobbyist-bundler for the Clinton campaign, beaten out only by D.C. lobbyist Heather Podesta, who's tallied up $348,581 so far.

More recently, and maybe you believe in coincidences...but.....

The 2016 Democratic Platform states:

Quote:2016
Instead of investing in more jails and incarceration, we need to provide greater investment in jobs and education, and end to the school-to-prison pipeline.

We will reform mandatory minimum sentences and close private prisons and detention centers.

If you think that was written without Hillary's input you're kidding yourself.

You aren't honestly referring to campaign ad copy as though it made any of the previously mentioned bits go away, are you?  Yes..that's what they say.  That's -why- it's so strange to see so much prison lobby money n their campaign, and to see the very organization connected to that money be among the providers who will get an extension..rather than being among those phased out as per the justice depts recent release.

If they started to -do- what their ad copy promises...it would be a 180 degree turn (as the helpful gentleman from the prison group in the video I linked mentioned...they are truly a bipartisan operation, both sides of the aisle have been good to them, and so have the last three administrations. I doubt that it's so important to anyone that they would lose votes over it, in this campaign, if they had to alter or minimize the importance of that campaign promise in the course of the general election, or afterward.
