I say never get married... it's superficial and gets in the way if you stop loving someone.
But then I suppose you knew I'd say that Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day

As my granddad says "You're a brave fucking man!". Just don't forget the three rings my friend: First there's the engagement ring, then there's the wedding ring, then there's suffering!
I'll skip the whole marriage thing, I'm not that brave. But yeah, if he cannot accept your lack of childish beliefs and your wish for a secular wedding, then be all out straight with him.

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity. Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist. You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them. RE: Atheist Marriage

Nice, Shell B. Indeed, family first.
It's such a sad twisted affair though, him telling her he will always be there as he's explaining that he won't be there for her on this. RE: Atheist Marriage

I doubt her father would see in Shell's response the irony of charitable atheist response to christian mean smallness.
I might have said there is a time when one needs to let go of an intellectually dead father and move on with one's own life. Then it is no longer about staying together because we like each other, but because the contract says we will. Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam

I think such emotional attachement to prospective procreative partner as can be called love is likely the evolutionary adaptation to meet only a subset of needs that is socialogically being served by the institution of marriage. If those other needs are unimportant to you, then marriage is inappropriate. For once I actually agree with you. Don't need to marry to declare love for each other. For some reason it feels like you've lost feeling in the whole point in being with that person. Besides, if things do go fuck, there's that whole expensive side to it. The divorce, the I'll take the house, you can have the car shit. I think it's more interesting to just keep it as a relationship. No legally binding shite.
