There are no numbers at all. They are abstract concepts. So if you say "zero doesn't exist", I'd agree with you. It doesn't exist in the same way that physical objects exist anyway.

Not understanding the difference between the real and the abstract isn't unique to him, it happens a lot when people try to force their imaginary friends into reality.

They are helpful in keeping track of and dividing quantities. Say I have 4 apples and I want to give 3 people an equal amount of apple, I'd give each person an apple and a third. But I didn't include myself so now I have no apple.

I could say I have zero apples but here is where zero becomes problematic. I have 0 apples in the same way I have 0 pumpkins, 0 purple elephants, 0 tickets to Mars and 0 post cards from Andromeda. There are probably multiple infinities of things that I have zero of.

If just said "I have zero..." You'd probably ask "Zero what?" and that would be an extremely long list.
