It is already happening in parts of Europe and it might happen in even more countries. The European extreme right had a gloating field day already. I predicted something like that in a recent discussion with Aractus where he tried to educate me on European rightwingers. I said that a Trump victory would add an additional boost and encourage them even more, if not even the largest economy and nuclear power can fend something like that off. A possibility I was always aware of in spite of all the Clinton hype.
My parents brought me up with stories of their lives in the late 30ies, early 40ies. They always used their life stories as a warning. Such as what ideas not to fall for. Maybe that's the reason why I'm totally insulated by a coat of deeply felt disgust whenever I hear some of these rightwing creatures open their loudmouths.
You are sweet Poca. : But my whole family are unilingual. Well, we are trying to learn German, but maybe I'm picking the wrong language there, from what people are saying about other parts of Europe.
I don't think we can get out of this. Plus, the great NW is my home. We are one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and I will not abandon it so easily.
I've been hearing Wexit jokes in my social groups. I dunno. We have our own farmland here, fishing, water, lumber, energy, etc. We don't need the center of the country. I'm ready to become WashiCaligon.
The amazing part is that that thing was put up by the city guys. At the bottom, you have the city's symbol (http://www.cm-lisboa.pt/en), the two crows on the sailboat.
As you can see, I'm not the anomaly

My gran was born in 1910. She lived with us my entire childhood, and I think I'm a better person for it.
She never got over the habit of saving everything, because of the depression. Not like a hoarder. But she bought and ate fruit that was not spoiled yet but was going bad, so it wold not get thrown out at the store. She saved clean tinfoil pieces to reuse. She mended everything, and we rarely bought new clothing. She was American though, so had no stories of the rise of the right in Europe. All the same, she knew the great depression first hand. The recent recession was nothing like that, and to compare it in order to play on symathies and to scare people simply disgusts me.
I know people lost their homes and jobs. But it wasn't a 10 year wasteland of starvation with no help. Now the same people who fear they will lose everything have just voted in someone who will remove the safety nets many JUST used, so next time, there may indeed be a true wasteland.
I've read about the conditions that lead to the wars in Europe. I guess I need to do a little homework and reaquaint myself with history again. It's been a while.
Of course, the problem is that if 55% of people cannot see it, the other 45% are doomed along with them.

Oh... the disunited states...
Brexit triggers Scotland to leave the United Kingdom... becoming the Not-so-united Kingdom...
Trump triggers WashiCaligon to leave the USA...
This is an interesting potential turn of events...
But... I gotta say that we too have one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
Behold:
Palácio da Pena, Sintra
Castelo de São Jorge, Lisboa
Troia
Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês
Serra da Estrela
Rio Douro (around which Port wine grapes are grown)
Interestingly the Simpsons had an episode where Trump had been president.
The writers said it was to represent America at an absolute Nadir, at the worst possible moment with the worst possible president.

And I'm pretty sure you would be wrong in that assumption. The unemployment numbers are constantly on the rise since 2008. At least in Europe. People falling below the poverty line of having less than a few hundred Euros at their disposal per month are the largest growing demographic. In my country already pushing 10 percent of the overall population. In danger of falling into poverty even a larger number.
It may not seem to have had the same implications, but you always have to view things in their perspective. Before 1935 there wasn't any kind of social security net in the USA and little of that in Europe. What counts is that people are far worse off than ten years ago and have little hope for their future and the future of their kids. That's exactly the same sentiment as in the early 30ies. And that's what gives rise to the messiah figures.

Well I currently live in Scotland and want to get back to Germany. But I am happy living in either country. I am not happy living in the rest of the UK though and I originally moved to Germany because I saw the route that Westminster was taking. I feel that Germany is one of the countries least likely to turn to fascism because they have experience of it in living memory.
