Which make up about 2 percent of all the soldiers. According to "On killing" by Dave Grossman. That's not to say that soldiers don't commit psychopathic acts under certain circumstances. This also according to numerous studies. But these follow a different dynamic than the individual being a psycho. It's the group, the loyalty to the brothers in arms and violence becoming the new normal. Several authors and scientists examined this phenomenon. Starting with incidents in WWII on all sides and ending with Mi Lai and incidents in Iraq.

Oh, so basically damned if I do damned if I don't? Okay, you're right.

I guess no soldiers have ever decided to serve because college wasn't an option for them. I must have just made that up in my head. My bad.

Except that I've literally heard multiple people say that they joined the army because they couldn't make it into a university. One kid told me it was either the Army or a factory and he didn't want to be working in a factory the rest of his life. I'm sure he's very honored to serve his country by default.

Do all soldiers think like this? No. Most probably don't. But to deny that none of our soldiers think this way is a bit ludicrous.

Is PTSD a natural, unavoidable reaction that happens to some people. Or can you avoid it willingly? Or depending on how strong you are mentally it triggers or not?

I guess it's always been around.





People just didn't understand it in the past. I guess a constant situation of kill or be killed does that to you.

I don't think modern humans are wired or built to live in combat situations like that. I would say it's unavoidable depending on how much trauma one person is exposed to. I was diagnosed with PTSD years after an incident where I was in a home invasion when I was 13. I still get paranoid about people breaking into my home and things like that. And quite honestly the situation wasn't even that extreme in the sense that no one was hurt, there was no gunfire or anything. They just held us up, took a bunch of money and jewelry and locked us all in a closet until they left. I couldn't imagine how bad it could be if you were trapped on a battlefield for days or weeks on end hearing constant gunfire and explosions and being shot at all the time. Seeing people you know get hurt/killed.. etc.

My buddy lost half his right leg to an IED explosion and still has nightmares about it all. I don't really think its a choice. I think some just deal with it better than others.
