Maybe they wanted him to be an Olympian?
OP\s Article Wrote:Prosecutor of Saint-Omer, Patrick Leleu, said the boy was 'forced to run over a distance of several kilometers along the La Lys canal'. The Loneliest Runner:
Wikipedia Wrote:Michael Landon was the real-life version of the loneliest runner. As a child, he wet his bed until he was 14 and his mother, Peggy O'Neill, really did hang his sheets to dry outside of his bedroom window as punishment. The dysfunctional family life that Landon experienced during his early life were also similar to the ones in this autobiographical film.
On a more serious note maybe religious based eugenics isn't the answer for a crime that seems to have nothing to do with religion?
Figure the french justice system can handle it just fine.

Well, five hours have passed since I first read the OP and I'm still crying over it.
I find myself wishing there was some way I could bring him back to life, just so I could comfort him.
I may be Agnostic, but I hope there's a special hell for people who torment children and animals.
EDIT:
Especially people who inflict torment by utilizing SHAME.
I've had plenty of experience with shaming, often over things I needn't have been ashamed of, in my life,
and it's a big part of what I despise about religion,
and I think it's part of the reason this story is rankling with me so much.
2nd EDIT:
And I may as well take this opportunity and context to point out that I don't just mean shaming humans.
Very often, people correct their dogs by saying "BAD DOG!",
and we forget animals are smarter than we give them credit for.
I certainly don't wish to detract from the central point of this post,
but abuse is abuse, verbal or physical,
whether directed at human or non-human;
and no innocent creature who made a simple, honest misstep,
deserves to be told they are fundamentally "bad"...
...they simply need to understand that they made a mistake.

I can't bear to read or hear stories about kids being abused or neglected.
If you have a child or spend much time around kids, it's frighteningly common to see and hear of abuse.
My daughter said to me this morning about her 8 year old friend at school: "Mom, Sarah told me that her mom slaps her in the face all the time."
I called the police on a neighbor that was beating her son who was about 4 or 5. I could hear the body hits through our shared apartment wall. That was a few years ago and I wonder to this day how that boy is doing.
There are many people that just aren't qualified to be parents.

Serious kudos to you for having the strength to go to the police over the child abuse you encountered.
Too many people just look the other way.

Goddammit.
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE.
Once again, I have to ask: Jesse Custer, help a brother out, will you?
Sadly, from what I can see, it looks like we're not likely to get anything like this scene in the series. Or in real life.

Or could it be that in America it would be classified as involuntary manslaughter?

Several specific crimes are enumerated under felony murder. The killing of a child through intentional torture, whether your intent was to kill him or not, could be one of those things.
I would argue that killing a child through preventing that child from receiving basic medical care because of your religious beliefs should at least be second degree murder.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Unfortunately, due to some legal gamesmanship in the 70's, something like eight of ten states have religious exemptions in their child abuse laws..placed there in order to secure federal funding...even though the requirements to have such exemptions in order to receive funding was actually removed, the states never got around to striking down the purpose built exemptions.
