My bold, that is not true. Papal infallibility has been used twice since 1870. First in defining the immaculate conception, and then in the assumption of Mary.
It is true that prior to Vatican 2 the consensus was that only Catholics went to Heaven. Since then, it has been revised that while everyone in Heaven is Christian/Catholic, it doesn't necessarily mean they were during this life.
I don't know much about Catholism's ins and outs but this sounds like what my Catholic husband said when I asked if he was sad that I won't go to heaven with him. He said that according to the pope anyone that is truly a good person gets to go to heaven regardless of belief. Now I don't know if that is official or that is him making himself feel better about me but it seems to go with what you are saying.

Everyone toils at the will of subjugating Ant Overlords after death.
Everyone.
Doesn't matter how good or bad they were, or what horse crap they believed during life in this dimension.
Fair or not, that's just what happens in next plane of existence.
Sorry.

Your husband is correct.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Your husband is correct.
So, Catholics cherry pick out John 3:16?
Please explain...
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Catholics are not alone in this. Universalism is an idea that is catching on. Jesus died for everyone. All are forgiven. I hope I can opt out and fade to black. The idea of an eternity singing "Mansion on a Hill" makes me queasy.

I didn't know heretics could bestow Salvation.

CatholicDefender was the first to try our newly renovated Vomulator. Turns out there wasn't anything much wrong with it; staff invariably sets it to "Projectile" and then waits a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes for the sock puppet to expire, and they assume the miscreant will projectile vomit continuously till they expire. Well, that is just an expectation. Once the stomach contents are expelled, yes, deeper materials are dredged up, and even some bones might erupt, but even that doesn't take more than 10 minutes, tops. The remainder of the cycle will be essentially 'dry', if you will, regardless of how vigorously the Vomulator is triggering the paroxysms of nausea. So, the machine is working properly, and staff has been advised as to how to evaluate it's proper functioning.
So, CatholicDefender did just fine in his final service to the AF Community. That's him all over . . . .

Even if you believe in afterlife does it really matter where someone goes? Would Anne Frank be any better, in so called Heaven, with a guy that made people that couldn't pick better then to be Nazis and persecute little girls? I don't think so.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
