Essentially they think sex is evil. Notice how most of our curse words have to do with body parts, or excrement that comes from our bodies? We need to make babies, so that's the only way they can justify ever having sex. It's also why priests and imams and such aren't supposed to have sex. They're considered more pure that way.
Homosexuality doesn't produce babies, so they don't see anything good coming out of it, so they ban it. They don't understand that sex is as much about bonding as it is about childbearing. They also may not understand that straight people might decide they like oral and anal sex too.
