Is atheism a belief?
#71
RE: Is atheism a belief?
SOME atheists may have the belief that no gods exist, but that is a minority position. All that is necessary to be an atheist, is to not be convinced that gods exist.

Specifically for me, I do not claim to KNOW if gods exist or not, therefore, I am agnostic.

I also am not convinced that gods exist, therefore, I am an atheist. This could be considered a disbelief in the existence of gods, but that is not the same as the belief that no gods exist.

Both these positions are provisional, not dogmatic. As long as the case for the existence of gods continues to not meet its burden of proof, I will continue to disbelieve in the existence of gods.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Hey Huggy, OP. Here's the crux of it.
Min can state he is certain there are no gods. So what? People say lots of thing.
He is wrong because technically you cannot falsify the unfalsifiable.

Theists make the positive claim, not us. They "know" god exists. This is infinitely more fallacious.
They cannot know, now can they? Unless of course they listen to the voices in their head!
If you're going to do that, then hell, knowledge means nothing. Back to solipsism we go.
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

"Positive atheism", in my case...anti-theism..is the belief that that the religious are assholes.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Did I say it was?

Plenty of you (possibly the vast majority, which includes YOU, are positive atheists, until a thread thread like this one pops up, then you guys want to back pedal and act like none of you has claimed God doesn't exist.

Nope but you keep implying it

Your second statement is false just about everyone here is a negative atheist and the rest is nonsense.

If theists "know" then what is 'faith' for?

I also like the fact that you guys claim you don't belong to a collective yet you are somehow are comfortable in speaking for just about every atheist on these forms.

Let's go over this shall we

Quote:I don't hate God.
Nothing to do with gods existence

Quote:I hate a fictional depiction in a story book in fact several story books .
Has nothing to do with the existence of god only that bible and most religious texts have  yet to demonstrate themselves and thus are  indistinguishable from works of fiction  . This is not a positive statement that god doesn't exist .

Quote:. Just the way I hate jar jar binks and he also likely doesn't exist
This clearly continues from the above the god of varied  religions remains undemonstrated and thus remains no less demonstrated then Jar Jar . This is not a positive statement that no gods exists .

Quote:You can in fact hate something that doesn't exist we do it all the time.
Again clearly stating you can hate something  that does not exist  and says nothing about it's existence

So this attempt fails

Quote:I also like the fact that you guys claim you don't belong to a collective yet you are somehow are comfortable in speaking for just about every atheist on these forms.
We aren't a collective but I am confident speaking for other atheists those two things don't follow . We can not be a collective and I can be confident in the position of other people .
