Guns and suicide

Guns and suicide
There is a lot of clamoring about guns and suicide in the US.

Does having a gun increase your chances of committing suicide?

Consider - other " first world nations".

Japan - has about 30,000 suicides a year - and none by firearm.

Israel has hundreds of suicide on an average year - and gun ownership ( including "assault rifles") is commonplace.

Hmmmm...

It increases your chances of -successfully- committing suicide.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

no.

It increases your ABILITY to do it sucessfully - but does not increase your chances (likelyhood).

Lol.

For some perspective....there’s no telling how many people attempt to commit suicide a year, in Japan. If the numbers here are representative of numbers there (or even close) it’s 25 to 1.

So, take that number if 30k, multiply it by 25, and then ask yourself what portion of those suicide attempts could have succeeded if access to firearms in Japan were similar to access here.

Then, remind yourself of the more tolerant view of suicide in Japan compared to the us.

- I’m not telling you that you have to give a shit, or that those lives, however many there are, are “worth it”. - only making sure that it’s blisteringly obvious that the number would be greater than zero.......lol.

RE: Guns and suicide
I have entertained thoughts of suicide, on and off, for years.
Not in the last 9 yrs since my daughter was born, just the 10 or so years before that, so don't worry. :-)
Obviously, you want the least amount of pain.
Jump from a cliff, drown, burn, overdose...all too painful.
High speed car crash. But you don't want to hurt others.
It's more difficult to find a spot then you think.
I spent weeks looking for a good spot, all while going about my usual business.
But if I had had a gun, it would have been so easy.
I know where to shoot to make sure it's a final.
I could also pick a location where I'd know that loved ones wouldn't be the first to find me.

Just a side note, I wasn't trying to take the easy way out.
I had fucked up so many other people's lives through my mental sickness that I was going to do it for them.

Uh. The Wall Street Journal just did a piece. They gave the number of zero suicides by firearm. That's not surprising considering how few firearms there are there. But - it seems the Japanese are inventive enough to figure out a way.

If firearms increased the number of suicides - Israel would lead Japan in suicide because of the easy access to firearms.

But it doesn't.

Why would you think that? Suicide isn’t a single line item ala “do you have a gun”.

- but it remains obvious that some number of the many .........many likely suicide attempts would, instead, be successful.

People don't " attempt" suicide with a gun.

They COMMIT it.

Exactly?
(Though, technically, some still fail - it’s pretty gruesome)
