I am a former professional Captain. I received my 50-ton Master license from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1997. It was upgraded to 100-ton in 2007. My license was for near-shore operation. I would have been shitting my pants to sail a small boat solo across the Atlantic because although I never operated off-shore, I know well what is involved. Encountering waves 20' high from crest to trough is not unusual. It's a big, fucking deal.

The weight of her political opinions is unaffected by her daring, true but when a 16-year-old accomplishes that, she definitely earns respect. Few adults with decades of experience would even attempt what she did.

Okay, it turns out this wasn’t actually a solo crossing. Her father, documentarian Nathan Grossman, And Two sailors doing the dirty work of actually making sure the boat stays on course. But, outside of the solar powered navigation system and the freeze-dried vegan meals, it doesn’t seem to be much better from the conditions in the Age of Sail. Conditions on board, to quote the Team Malizia website, “Note that there are no toilet, fixed shower, cooking facilities and proper beds. The boat’s interior is characterised by lack of comfort.” The only additions are curtains at the front of the bunk and some mattresses.

Doesn’t necessarily add or detract from what she actually has to say, but it is a sign she really tries to practice what she preaches.

Whether or not it’s possible to stall the effects of climate change any more than it is to stall the inevitable heat death of the universe, that we can actually debate.

You think i just pushed papers? Yeah - at my first duty station. The second? Qualified smallboat crew. Did blind navigation with only compass, chart,  MF ADF and depth finder. No LORAN or GPS.

And sail?

Yeah - I crossed Lake Michigan - solo - at night in a gale... A lake.. Big deal huh?  

A 21foot Aquarius sailboat 45 miles offshore - no GPS,  LORAN,  or even a chart. Out of radio contact for hours.. Just me all by myself... 8-10 foot swells.

Just a compass and my knowledge of the lake.

From.Milwakee - I sailed straight to Holland. My intended destination. 

Fun trip.

The thing is that Greta's message is not aimed at individual people but to leaders to implement plans. Unlike big companies, that do the dirty work of polluting and then are constantly putting blame on people individuality. So that's why, perhaps, some people are so rattled, they're fed up of being made to feel guilty, but that's not Greta's aim. And indeed, it's the governments around the world that need to stand up to big polluters, to come up with plans of how to deal with plastic garbage, carbon and other toxic emissions that are, frankly, directly responsible for millions of deaths among people.
