I think the most appropriate book to send back would be one that potentially advances technology faster than it has. The challenge would be deciding which piece of technology properly sparked the modern world, and what age in the past would be ready for it.
As a first test run, I'd send my book back to 2014, man that'd save me so much work. Next, I'd send a piece of paper back to the year 1100 that just says:
"Polish a concave mirror and a small lense like so: <drawing> and point the contraption to Saturn. Cool eh? Now that I have your attention: WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING ANYONE, DISEASE MOSTLY COMES FROM TINY ANIMALCULES.
