Age of the Universe/Earth

Age of the Universe/Earth
Hello, I am a new user here.

I was having a conversation with an old Earth creationist (on Youtube) and this is what he wrote:

----------------------------
The Bible doesn't say anything ab't the age of the earth. A poster made the same claim. I pointed to Gen. 1:9 (where God separates the water and dry land appears) and noted that in order for it to make sense the water and land had to have already been here. He replied, "I never saw that!" I believe him.
----------------------------

I was telling him that according to the Bible, the age of the Universe/Earth is about 6000 y.
I don't know which atheist he talked to but it sounds like that atheist has not read the Bible.

I am an atheist.
What he writes doesn't make sense to me. Does it make sense to you?
I fully agree with him that the Earth, water, heaven already existed @ line Genesis 1:9. That is something that happens on day 3.

I will also invite him to these forums so that he may explain to us his POV.

The 6,000 year thing is derived from counting generations and assuming the first five days of creation were literally five 24-hour days. In the NT, it is made clear that 'days' for God are not necessarily the same as human days, citing the possibility that a day could be a thousand years. Once that door is open, why not a day that is 600 million years? Mainstream Christians usually don't have a problem with an old earth, it's the young earth creationists who can't handle deep time.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

I know of a video on Youtube that, as long as you ask God to help you ignore the glaring inaccuracies and misrepresentations, resolves Genesis with science perfectly.    Confusedarcasm:

RE: Age of the Universe/Earth
Your creationist friend is trying to negotiate with reality over the contents of an etiological myth. Why do snakes crawl on their belly (and why do we hate them) and why are men in charge of women and why is this life full of misery and why must we work the fields and why is childbirth so painful and dangerous and what should we..or even can we, do about such things?

These are the questions that genesis sought to answer. It was not recounting the details of creation as a news report from the beginning of the universe. Not even in it's own time. It's expected for a creationist to get a wide range of facts thoroughly and irredeemably wrong - but the thing that flies under the radar, is how completely they misread their own magic book. Not as in not knowing one line out of hundred, or this or that order from one chapter to the next - but fundamentally.

It isn't surprising, and it really isn't a valid criticism of the authors, that they managed to fuck it up. They had no way of knowing better, and weren't interested in expounding upon those things modern day creationists, who can and should and often enough do know better tie their scrotums into knots over, today.

Bishop Ussher counted the BEGATS in the Old Testament and the ages the Elders lived. He ignored the fact that the Elders are not quoted or mentioned after a reasonable lifespan. If the OT were true you would have people with literally centuries of experience, and you might want to consult with them once in a while. Doesn't happen.

Welcome Woof noob!

Sure, invite the bible guy around. Discussing a man made story about a god, and what that god can and can't do, is always fascinating.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

here is a video I made on the subject it answers this very question in detail.

This number as per my video is a correct number based on the geneologies from christ back to adam. But you have to realise at this point Adam and eve were not having children till after the exile from the garden.(Chapter 3 was the exile)

which again from the genealogies this is about 6000 years ago.

Here's the thing. there is no time line between the end of chapter 2 and the beginning of chapter 3. Chapter 2 says the garden and everything in it was produced by Christ day 3 apart from the rest of creation. From the end of chapter two there is still 4 more day of the chapter one seven day creation.

IE there is no indication how long Adam and Eve where in the garden. could have been a week or a million years or 100 bazillion years. the point is the came out of the garden 6000 years ago.

Also mentioned in the video.

Chapter 1 is a overall 'terraforming of the whole planet/seeding of the world.'

Chapter 2 is garden only narrative. in the garden everything was made in it's evolved form as it would have appeared 6000 years ago. As this was the world Adam had to be compatible with.

Between chapter two and chapter three all of evolution could have happened.

At least the young Earth creationists are not reinterpreting the story into something it is not.
The Genesis story is talking about creating light, seperating light from dark and then you have day and night, right? So, if that is the case, it is talking about day for the Earth.

Good point.
