Atheists may have a Protestant grandfather or a Catholic Grandmother etc.
It may be interesting to talk about our background a bit.

I think you’ll find that the majority of atheists here have a Christian background, and why wouldn’t they? Atheism isn’t hereditary. Boru RE: Have you got some kind of Christian backgound?

My dad and his family were/are Catholic. Mom's side mostly Methodist. In order for them to marry in the eyes of The Church mom had to agree that any kids born to them would be raised Catholic. *she was 16 at the time so I doubt a tremendous amount of thought was put into the decision*
As a little kid I went to Catechism classes until we moved to dad's hometown where all the schools except the kindergarten were Catholic schools. We were put through the paces and the sacraments as expected but religion wasn't really a big deal within our family other than presenting the appearance of being good mass-attending and tithing Catholics so as to appease dad's Catholic clients...and most of them were Catholic. My sister and I are atheist and my brother did the church thing to get the price break for his son's middle and high school education at Catholic schools. edit - shortly before my dad's death he told me he was an atheist and had been for quite a while.
My grandmother is a Baptist, and helped raise my sister and I in religion. My parents aren't very religious, and I left, but my sister held on to it. To the point that she sends her kids to a christian school. It gets annoying when she comes over, and wants everyone to say grace before eating. We never did that when we were kids, and I was shut down when I ignored it at first.

Zero religion in home when I was kid. Not much contact with the cousins. (We were in Indiana, they were in the Ozarks.) Presumably g-grands were Prots.
Mom Catholic, dad nominally Lutheran but except for marrying or burying he never set foot in a church.

My birthgivers were strictly into Zuul.
My immediate family were/are nominally CofE, not that this means anything.
I was sent to a catholic school for the educational reputation. Somewhere in my background I have an ancestor who was supposed to be involved in the first Sunday school.
