Holy fuck.

The stupid.

Do I really have to draw you a picture?

In a house fire - ammunition will cook off - HARMLESSLY. The bullets pop out of the case with very little velocity.

Confined in a hardened box?

You just built a bomb.
With only one or two boxes of .22 long rifle.

Do you really hate first responders that much?

Yeah, a bunch of small explosions are just as deadly as one big one? Do you think the rounds will all cook off at once? Or did you just type shit and hope it would be coherent, for a change?

I don’t think that would be the case. Paper burns at a much lower temperature than gunpowder ignites. It a fire safe will keep papers from burning, the temp inside the safe would be low enough to prevent cook-off.

The safe is for keeping my kids grubby mitts off the ammo OLB, not protecting the rounds in a fire. I wouldn't worry too much about first responders. Cross that bridge when my house is ablaze. In the meantime, I like my kids with just the holes they were born with. Besides, they might be a little bit more concerned about the methane tanks or the trap well, lol.

If you live in a place where you have to worry about ammo cooking off or turning into a bomb, you should probably keeps your guns elsewhere.

When I kept guns and ammo at home the local first responders knew where I kept it. (And that was in an old chest type freezer in the detached garage, padlocked.)

That would satisfy cap laws.

I had an ALZ person living with me. She called the police twice to report an intruder sleeping on the livingroom couch. I figured she'd take more direct "protective" action if she could get hold of a gun.

Not in most states.

A gun safe as defined is a unit manufactued as such. Not a busted down freezer with a fucking padlock on it.

There is no legal reason to lock up ammunition. No practical reason either. Unless you're worried about it being a small object choking hazard.

And in a confined area LIKE THE INSIDE OF A SAFE - ammo does not simply cook off. It creates an ever faster chain reaction. An explosion.

Cap laws don't require gun safes. Like I said, they're very permissive.

There's every reason to secure either the gun or the ammo, legally. I had a safe, I secure the ammo. The guns I buy usually come with trigger locks, my favorites also have cables and hammer keys. Any of these things...any of them, satisfy cap laws. I have them all because it's something on my mind as a dad and, frankly, the shit comes in the box by default. The Wife's family were never gun owners - it helps her and them feel better, too. Rightly so, they feel better because I've taken simple and reasonable precautions which are required by law so that the likelihood of my guns "going off" and hitting a kid are effectively nil...while any accident that could still (improbably) occur won't leave my children wards of the state.

A combo lock on a plastic tacklebox full of rounds satisfies cap laws. It's very easy to do, satisfying the legal minimum for gun safety in a house full of kids. That's why there's no excuse not to do it.

This is a doomed argument, and I don't believe that you really think there's anything wrong with these laws.

The lowest temperature of ignition I’ve found for primer (via the interwebz) is 320F. We have a firesafe for documents and such that is rated to keep whatever’s inside the safe at 125F for two hours.

How would cook-off be possible?
