Evolutionary need for written language?
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Not religion per se but belief in god has been theorized (and supported by some research) as having evolutionary basis. It basically has been theorized as a (useful) byproduct of our brain's ability to see patterns in nature, the ability to see something from others' point of view (theory of mind or empathy––giving rise to seeing intent in natural phenomenon), and passing on knowledge to next generations.

I suspect that’s largely the case. It wouldn’t take much for Oog to notice that it generally got cloudy before a thunderstorm, and - for him - a reasonable explanation would have been that Great Cloud Pusher was angry about something.

Probably not. We were religious and had rituals and ritual beliefs for many (many many many many many) thousands of years before anyone came up with the silly man in the sky shit - which would have seemed even sillier to people with those strong religious beliefs. A bit like they're all convinced to this very day that the rest of them sound silly.
Theism and theistic religion is very uniquely and very distinctly a product of the late neolithic and early bronze related to the organization of nascent societies with needs that exceed (and evade) the tight and tacitly accepted bonds and rules of the extended family unit.
TDR version is that it would have sounded ridiculous that a man ran shit in the sky when men didn't run shit on the ground yet. It's only after that point that we see any indication of such beliefs.

Everything has an evolutionary basis. The question is how to meaningfully separate out explanations that highlight salient points. Saying it evolved can be applied to anything human.
