We change our currency all the time. I don't think need comes in. I think that it's amazing that it's taken to just about the end of cash money to deal with the issue of what we represent on it's face.
Had plenty of time to put birds and shit on it.

I wouldn't call that "all the time". 
Who carries cash? I used to for tips but I haven't been to a restaurant in so long that's not even a thing in my world any more.
The only person I pay in cash is the dog groomer who comes to my house. We could cycle through state birds and flowers and such on paper money as well as coins.
