Sodom found?

Sodom found?
Sodom and Gomorrah were cities in the book of Genesis, which were destroyed by fire from the sky for their sins (everyone was horny and liked male angels).

Lot was a good man and was warned, but his wife looked back at the destruction and was turned into a pillar of salt.

As mentioned in Wikipedia, Tall el-Hammam in the Jordan valley near the Dead Sea has been proposed as one historical site for Sodom, if Sodom was in fact a real place that was destroyed.

Well, according to https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-0...78-3#Sec68 , the best explanation for the archaeological investigation of Tall el-Hammam was that it was destroyed by a meteorite airburst, of larger magnitude than the Tunguska Event in 1908.  This also seems to have spread salt from the Dead Sea over a large area of land, making it infertile for 100s of years.

Could it be that this ridiculous story was originally inspired by a real event?

I think a lot of Biblical stories and other myths have grains of truth in them....tiny though they may be. It's that shred of truth that the believers cling to and try to use as 'proof'.

...as long as they are taken with grains of salt. Big Grin

At work.

In a quick glimpse at an article I found referencing the event there was mention of ongoing discussion as to aspects of the archeology.

Is still interesting and given thd latest observation of a rock again just missing us puts into question of why a diety even wants to 'Play marbles' withb its creation. Tongue

I think most of biblical stories can probably be traced to some event, even if retelling, embellishment, and no doubt many layers of purposed distortion by self righteous moralizers makes what the original event was hard to make out.

I really hate theists arguments, of any religion when they point out to holy writings, that this place existed or that person existed. Ok, by that logic flying like Superman is real because I have seen movies with Superman flying around New York and San Francisco.

A few years back, some B movie makers made a movie about Lincoln being a vampire slayer.

The paper is getting dragged by the people who's work it cites, and experts in the relevant fields. Happens every now and again.

RE: Sodom found?
well, on the face of it, the odds of a major bolide air burst of the magnitude described occurring over a given spot during historic times is extremely small. The two largest event of this nature to happen during the 20th century didn’t come close to causing any conflagration on the ground. AFAIK there is no record of such an occurrence within reliable historic records, which tend to suggest its frequency of occurrence over the land surface of the earth is at most once every few centuries. So the chance of one of these occurrences having visited a particular spot in the last 5000 years must be almost infinitesimal.

RE: Sodom found?
Story of Sodom and Gomorrah is pretty much stolen from the Greek mythology of Baucis and Philemon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baucis_and_Philemon
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I'm not sure why you would 'hate' that. If the existence of the city of Sodom is confirmed, isn't that a good thing? You know, science and whatnot.
