I have a freezer full of venison that shows an AR15 is a handy thing to have.
YMMV

-and yet, despite their claims, the most likely gun for any american to be shot with is already in their own house. I think you probably know better than to trust the things some americans might claim about guns, right?
So, let's make sure we're having a reality based discussion. The us is not the wild west. Americans don't wander a hellscape where even 1% of us would need or be better of with a gun. We do not possess the guns we do, or the amount of guns our superusers who drive those stats possess, for any reason related to violence or crime whatsoever. We're collectors and we're sport shooters. Unlike much of the rest of the developed world - huge swathes of our country host nothing but game. Additionally, range competitions are a much larger market here than anywhere else, and not by a little.
Gun control as you understand it is a cynical ploy to rile up a base of voters through the victimization narrative of rights abrogation. It's dangerous here - but pathetic when someone from notheristan breathlessly repeats that nonsense. Even in country, it's not as if the case for rights abrogation is best made by current or proposed gun laws - nor is there any shortage of actual issues to contextualize and demonstrate that concern.

I’ve never understood why people who will eat squirrel will balk at eating rat.

Only if it wears a jaunty hat.
But, if people insist on hunting, I’d like to see them honour our human evolution and run game down on foot.

Boru It' s the luxury of being well fed.
Get hungry enough - and rat might become your favorite meal....

A contemporary hunter and a paleolithic hunter would probably pick similar hides if they could. A place you can run down game is going to be a pretty damned good place to shoot them from too. Ironically, you'll find that there's alot more control over those old methods of hunting, in the us, than of our new method.
If I had to toss a guess out there - I'd say bowhunting goes away before rifles do. Not just because of that historic trend - but because well intentioned (I think..misguided) people can easily apply the justifications for prohibitions on pit traps and spears and any number of projectiles to bows. Rifles, otoh, cannot be maintained to be both lethal and dangerous in the case of humans, but not sufficiently lethal or dangerous in the case of wild animals - such that it becomes a welfare issue. As just one very prevalent example.

Granted that it’s not a static process. Nevertheless, humans evolved to be persistence hunters.
No worries - it was meant as a joke. As I’ve said multiple times on these fora, I don’t have any real issues with hunting.
